Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Newbie... big whopping newbie.
I'm not particularly well up on Gothic music.
What bands would you recommend to someone new?
Much appreciated

Siouxsie and the Banshees.

And now beside those random ones, there's also Sex Gang Children, Christian Death (Rozz's band before Shadow Project), The Southern Death Cult, Theatre of Hate, Skeletal Family, The Deep Eynde, All Gone Dead, and Alien Sex Fiend.
These ones can be described (either accurately or only to some extent) as deathrock.
Other bands besides those:
Bauhaus
Peter Murphy (his solo works)
The Cure
Ataraxia (awesome band, can't quite describe their style)
Kaizers Orchestra
The Cruxshadows (darkwave)
Current 93

Haunted, how could you have The Deadfly Ensemble for far down? ┬_┬
P.S. When I eyed the part of Jarl's list that had "Lacrimosa, New Model Army, Moonspell, and Oingo Boingo " I read 'lesbo' somewhere in the scramble.

Every band mentioned in the thread so far is excellent, but perhaps a bit of an overload for someone completely new to the genre.
Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy would be a good introduction to British post-punk, with Rozz Williams' Christian Death thrown in to represent deathrock.
If you enjoy those bands, you'll probably enjoy most other gothic rock as well.

Hehe, oh my! This is an overload, but I likes it, likes it a lot
I've heard of a few of these; I've listened to the Cure and Bauhaus. And up until With Teeth, I loved NIN... Mmm awsome,
I now have a list and I'm working my way through it slowly . Thank ya very much!
