They call me Rubix!

... Just kidding, they don't. But you will. :)

Questionnaire:

1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job)
I like music (who doesn't?). I enjoy reading up on whatever happens to pique my interest. YouTube is fun. I like to draw, though I'm no better than the next guy.

I'm also a rapper - as I'm aware of the stigma that carries, I'm fully prepared to be slapped around a little (especially on this forum I'd imagine). :)

2. Where are you from?
Melbourne, Australia.

3. Who is your favorite author?
Sorry, I don't really read.

4. What are your favorite films?
in no particular order: Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Donnie Darko, Kill Bill Vol. 1 + 2, The Predator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Requiem For A Dream, Blow, Cruel Intentions...

theres more.. too much more. Moving on ..

5. What music do you want played at your wedding?
I doubt there will be a wedding.

6. At your funeral?
I will write a funny song about coming back as a zombie, and have that played.

7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?
Heart attack from winning the lottery.

8. What kind of casket would you want?
Tutenkhamun's

9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?
My favourite is naked!

10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?
The ability to be fully absorbed by a TV show, film or video game to the point I'm no longer aware the outside world exists.

11. What's your favorite band?
Rhyme Asylum, DZK, Prime, Fluent Form, Respek B.A, Tech N9ne, Stig Of The Dump. These are underground hip hop artists and groups. Being predominantly a fan of rap, it's only natural that hip hop artists are my favorites. I'm open to any genre, though I'm not as well educated on them as I would like to be.

12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?
Not a good one :(

13. Why did you join?
Expanding my horizons. I'd like to learn more about the gothic culture. It's very intriguing and mysterious from an outsiders view =) I wanna know what distinguishes a goth from a poser, what separates the wannabes from the killer bees.

And of course, I'm looking for new music to listen to. Hopefully I will get all this from reading whats posted on these boards.

14. If the first 13 questions didn't give it away. What is your gender?
I'm a man. :)

and now..

A Question For YOU:
I was wondering, what it is that makes a song qualify as gothic. What constitutes a song that can be called gothic.

I would totally use the search function but I wouldn't know what keywords to punch in! If theres already a thread for this question, could somebody throw me a link?

I rap on occassion myself, and, though I can't make any guarantees, hopefully no one will antagonize you for enjoying rap music, especially given that, if spoken word is good enough for Rozz Williams, it should be good enough for everyone on G-Net.

The question as to what constitutes a gothic song is a complex one, and indeed one of the gothic community's favorite pastimes entails inventing different answers to that very question. The first goth rock bands were generally post-punk outfits whose music and lyrics evoked a 'darker' atmosphere and were therefore declared to be 'gothic' by the media- who possibly, if I recall correctly, were spurred to do so by a remark originally authored by the manager of Joy Division. Doubtlessly, to at least some extent, what establishes a band as goth has to do with the visual aesthetic favored by the group and by extension its fans, be it a morbid elegance or grotesque, sanguinary exhibitionism- this dynamic is observable in the way in which ensembles like the Cruxshadows, because its members and fans dress in a 'goth' way, are considered to be 'goth-friendly' even as their sound bears little resemblance to that of Bauhaus or the genre's other founders.
That's just my take anyway. In all likelihood, some other G-nettian will render a brutal rebuttal which proclaims that all I've said is totally wrong and I'm a bad goth. That's all part of the fun of being a member of the goth community. Enjoy your stay!

You should post some pictures of this outfit. Could we have a rule that everyone has to post a picture of their favorite outfit?

Aye but have you ever been to a nudist beach? When the word "nudist" is mentioned all the old, fat women get their tits out and all the old wrinkly men get their ****s out. We don't want none of that now, do we?
We might need a screening process.

NOTE: The questions asked are open for everyone to answer

Thank you for the warm welcome, Post Modern Girl! I am going through the music forum as you suggested, hoping to find something that speaks to me.

gothicusmaximus, I highly appreciate your effort to express your opinion of Gothic music to me. So you say the aesthetics of a band can define it as gothic, even if the music itself doesn't share roots with post-punk (please correct me if I'm wrong here)? Thats very interesting to me. If thats the case then that must mean artists of any genre are capable of making a song that can be rightly put in the gothic genre?

Is there any way to musically define a gothic song? is there any distinguishing features one can listen out for, and say "this is/isn't gothic"

Also one more thing, gothicusmaximus. So you listen to rap as well do you? Do you know of any rappers/groups who (perhaps attempt to) blend hip hop with gothic by any chance? Hopefully with an accurate portrayal of both genre's, haha. I'm thinking something like this may help me understand things quicker. If not, thats cool. Just thought I'd ask.

And Lol @ the nudist talk going on in this thread. I will keep my eyes on this forum in case Renatus' rule is implemented. I will have no trouble understanding and appreciating naked goth girls

Thank you all for welcoming me, I appreciate it

Well, there's a difference between goth and gothic. Goth is essentialy goth rock, though the term "gothic rock" is used interchangeably. Gothic is moreso describing a band with goth tendencies, whether in sound or aesthetic. For example, the Sisters of Mercy are goth rock. They've got the sound, the aesthetic, and the image down. On the other hand, Cocteau Twins are not goth rock, but you'll find a lot of goths like them because they retain a bit of the atmosphere and feel. It can get confusing.

Good Point, Drac. There was a thread about this but it's probably buried deep within the Music section.

If you're wanting to know what's Gothic music, then you've got a huge variety to choose from. I would suggest listening to Voltaire first to get because his music is quite genial. That would open your mind to something rather light before you got in amongst the thick of what is Gothic music.

http://www.voltaire.net/

He has free songs to download there, plus he will probably give you a greater insight to what is Goth/Gothic.

Next, if you want to do a bit of youtube searching, I'll give you some songs to search for that will tell you what are Goth Rock.

Search for... Hong Kong Garden by Souixsie & The Banshees

Lucretia my Reflection by Sisters of Mercy

100 Years by The Cure (You'll get only live videos for this)

She's in Parties by Bauhaus

Cities in Dust by Souixsie & The Banshees

Cuts you up - Peter Murphy

That will give you a broad view of what Goth Rock is. Search more into Bauhaus & Peter Murphy if you wanna get specific, they were the first of the first Goth rock bands.

Now if you want to search into Gothic music....

Clown by Switchblade Symphony

Every day is Halloween by Ministry

Monophobia by Moi Dix Mosi

Copycat by Lacrimosa

Cavity 1st communion by Christian Death (Type in Rozz to get the true Christian Death as well on youtube)

Ingnore the machine by Alien Sex Fiend

That's probably enough for now.

But yeah, those will give you enough information for you to process what Gothic music is.

---------------------------------------------

Nice to meet you Rubix, I hope I answered your question enough for you.

One more thing....

Wu-Tang clan is fuckin' outstanding. <---- Correct or incorrect?

It's weird that there's a lot of things that can fall into the gothic rock category when it has some good diversity. And by the time we talk about gothic music rather than goth music there's not that much similarity.
If you want to understand what makes gothic rock, gothic rock, I'd just tell you to listen to some bands and see if you find a relationship between them. I really can't, I just do. Listen to bands like Bauhaus and The Mission UK, Miranda Sex Garden and Southern Death Cult, The Cruxshadows and Sex Gang Children. Basically anything between those can be considered gothic rock.
Note that, although many goths like metal, and virtually all posers think metal is what goths listen to, there's very little metal in gothic rock music. There are metal bands that look dark, and they do have much more to do with gothic literature and gothic architecture, but they were not and are not part of the subculture in themselves. I don't remember who said it, but basically 'gothic metal is more gothic than gothic rock, but it's still not goth.'

I'd love to help you with the entire gothmusicsituation, but I'm not big on genres, and I just listen to whatever is there. Welcome to the boards, though. :] I doubt you'll be ridiculed for your rapping, since plenty of people here have expressed their not-so-appealing taste in music. If you want a dose of that, there's a "guilty pleasures" board. =P

Welcome to the boards Rubix! A bit more diversity always goes over well. For my two cents musicwise, I would suggest youtubeing Greensward Grey, by Cinema Strange, and I second Clown as a good choice.

Another thing I should point out is deathrock. Deathrock is essentially horrorpunk combined with goth, and a LOT of goth rock bands would also qualify as deathrock.

I'm curious though, have you heard Busdriver or Cannibal Ox by chance?

Hmm perhaps a min number of fully clothed shots before being allowed to post nude shots, that is pending approval of the fully clothed shots.

We've hi-jacked this guys intro page and made it about nudists! Haha Im sorry Rubix!

Yea, but there is one rule ... none of this Myspace photo stuff where the flash is sooooo bright you can't actually make out if they are human. And no shots from weird angles that make you believe they are an attractive 18 year old lipstick lesbian when really they are 50, sagging and slightly bald.
