"Though it was not immediately foreseen, Arkham House had its inception in the death of Howard Phillips Lovecraft on March 15, 1937â€. These words of reflection penned by August Derleth some 20 years after the creation of Arkham House (AH) show the initial purpose of AH, but they also foretell what was to become of this now historical icon in the world of small pulp publishers. AH not only thrives today as a result of the vision of August Derleth and Donald Wandrei; the company brings the past alive through the works of Lovecraft, Derleth, E. Hoffman Price, and Nelson Bond. AH published its first book, The Outsider and Others by Lovecraft, in 1939. More than sixty years and 200 books later, Lovecraft remains on the center stage of its success while introducing fans to new authors to the world of the macabre, fantasy, and horror. New authors like John D. Harvey (The Cleansing) bring exciting energy to readers while keeping the integrity of the mission set forth by AH’s founders. The works presented by AH over the years would excite the likes of Lovecraft and his fellow pulp fiction authors. Soon after Lovecraft’s death, Derleth received a letter from Wandrei with news of the death of Lovecraft on March 15, 1937. In the afternoon of receipt of the letter, Derleth wrote Wandrei “that something should be done to keep Lovecraft’s work in printâ€. The two young writers later agreed that collecting the stories was not enough; they needed to be published. They did so and passed along the manuscript to Derleth’s then publisher, Charles Scribner’s Sons, which rejected the idea. Thus, Arkham House was born.Subterranean Press

CGP has now been publishing alternative forms of literature since February of 2003. We welcome you to browse around and see what we're all about. There is a bit of restructuring going on right now, given what we've learned about the small press industry and what readers are looking for, but our goal is still to provide alternative ideas for what defines the word 'book.' In a nutshell, we are still primarily a publisher of the novella form, in ebook, chapbook, and audiobook formats. We have begun publishing books in trade paperback format as well, featuring our annual anthology of humorous speculative ficiton, the Amityville House of Pancakes.Red Deer Press

Red Deer Press was incorporated in 1975 as a not–for–profit corporation limited by guarantee. Following a 1981 reorganization, the Press grew consistently and substantially both in terms of title output and in terms of sales and marketing activity both nationally and internationally. Title output grew from a single edition to fourteen to sixteen titles plus, on average, eight to ten reprints annually. In 2004, Red Deer Press launched the Robert J. Sawyer Books a line of literate, philosophically rich science–fiction titles personally selected by the man the Ottawa Citizen calls "the dean of Canadian Science Fiction." Each book under this imprint appeals both to SF fans and to general readers who enjoy a mingling of the intimately human with the grandly cosmic.Scorpius Digital

Now more than 30 years and more than a thousand titles later, DAW has a well-deserved reputation for discovering and publishing the hottest talents in the industry. Many stars of the science fiction and fantasy field made their debuts in the pages of a DAW book, including Tad Williams, C. J. Cherryh, Mercedes Lackey, Melanie Rawn, C.S. Friedman, Jennifer Roberson, and Tanith Lee. Despite its high profile, DAW is still a small private company, owned exclusively by its publishers, Elizabeth R. Wollheim and Sheila E. Gilbert. Betsy and Sheila are strongly committed to discovering and nurturing new talent, and to keeping a personal "family" spirit at DAW—something they feel is all too rare in today's world of international conglomerate publishing. Chaosium, (Kay-Oss-Eum) is known for publishing high quality books & games, and for having a well-developed sense of fun. In 1975 the company was founded as The Chaosium by Greg Stafford. It was later incorporated as Chaosium Inc. Chaosium thrives in the mild climate, gorgeous surroundings, and gentle earthquakes of the San Francisco Bay area. The main office is in Hayward, located about half-way between San Francisco and San Jose. A short walk away is a very good micro-brewery (and one of the oldest!) and Charlie Kranks home. Charlie is our president and resident BBQ expert. The Chaosium sales, promotion, and propaganda office is located in Silverton, Colorado. No one really understands why that is. Dustin Wright, the fellow who lives and works there, is hard-pressed to explain it himself though sitting at an elevation of 9318 feet, the area holds a curious resemblance to the Plateau of Leng. Most of Chaosium's product lines are based upon literary sources. H.P. Lovecraft's 1920's horror fiction provides the basis of the classic Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game line which has won so many awards that the we have lost count, though we do know that there are more than 70 of them. Mr. Lovecraft also provides the inspiration for our many Call of Cthulhu Fiction collections. Michael Moorcock's popular Eternal Champion Swords & Sorcery novels form the foundation of the Stormbringer roleplaying game. Both Call of Cthulhu and Stormbringer use our Basic Roleplaying system which is alive and well despite many, many years of fun and insanity. In 2005, Chaosium is celebrating our 30th anniversary. 8th Crow Books

Major Genre Book Publisher. The best in Science Fiction and Fantasy publishing. Jim Baen started his publishing career, appropriately enough, in the complaint department of Ace Books after stints in the Army, at CCNY, and in Greenwich Village in the Sixties working as the manager of a folk music coffee shop (a "basket house"). He soon moved to take Judy Lynn Del Rey's place at Galaxy magazine, and became editor of Galaxy and If in 1974 after brief trip back to Ace to be assistant Gothics editor. While at Galaxy he published such authors as Jerry Pournelle, Charles Sheffield, Joanna Russ and John Varley, and was nominated for several Hugo Awards. He returned to Ace to head their science fiction line, working with publisher Tom Doherty. When Doherty left to start Tor, Baen shortly followed and started the SF line there. In 1983 he had the opportunity to start his own independent company, Baen Books, distributed then and now by Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster. Baen Books has become a market leader, publishing books at the heart of SF, by authors such as David Drake, Lois McMaster Bujold, Elizabeth Moon, David Weber, James Hogan, Mercedes Lackey, Larry Niven and many more. Jim Baen was very active on the baen.com website, "Baen's Bar," where his interests in evolutionary biology, space technology, politics, military history, and bad puns are discussed along with science fiction. Publishing limited edition hardcovers, Delirium Books seeks to bring forth some of the world’s greatest authors in the small press, and display their talents in a collectible fashion. Delirium’s main objective is to provide, both collectors and readers alike, a high quality, durable limited edition hardcover that will last lifetimes. Delirium’s pledge is to offer the book buying community both excellent quality in printing and binding of the books offered. Delirium continues to grow and is now recognized as the premier horror publisher for the collector’s market, producing low print run limited editions that continue to increase in value, sometimes reaching hundreds and even thousands per title on the secondary market. In 2005, Delirium Books won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award for Excellence in Specialty Press Publishing. This was presented to Delirium Books by the HWA (Horror Writer’s Association). The same year, Delirium took home the first annual Shocker Award for Small Press of the Year. This award was presented by Shocklines.com, one of the biggest independent horror booksellers in the U.S. In the Fall of 2006, Delirium Books revamped its editorial presence as Shane Ryan Staley appointed an Associate Editor (Greg F. Gifune) and an Assistant Editor (David Marty) to his staff. Looking ahead, favorite Delirium authors of the past have signed on for future books and exciting new talents have joined the cast of authors to make the coming years ones to watch. Delirium is truly publishing the future of horror today. The Damned Interviews
