On a late afternoon in late August, I was winding up the rubber band on my wooden plane, when I heard a loud scream followed by a the sound of smashing glass. A woman darted past my friends and I. Then a man, who had a knife in his belly, chased her holding a hairspray can and a lighter. Trying to catch her on fire. This moment appeared to freeze in time for me. It was very many years ago yet I remember it like it just happened. As he ran past us I watched a lot of blood shooting from his stomach. It was almost cartoon like and looked more like red paint then blood. There was so much of it and it seemed to be everywhere in the court yard. The man collapsed before making out of the court yard and the women got away. Someone from the apartments called an ambulance and the police and some women brought out towels to try to help the man. It seemed strange to me that all the towels were white and I witnessed them soaking up the blood, then looking like carcasses laying on the ground. He was yelling at everyone about how he caught his love cheating and that they argued for a while until she stabbed him. Right after saying this he pulled the knife from his belly. The blood looked like it was coming from a hose and the blood ran so fast. I kept thinking, run, but my damn feet were frozen. Moments later I was rescued by my father as he threw me over his shoulder and ran up to our floor. We all watched as the man had to be restrained by police before the ambulance was able to take him away. Later that evening, all of us kids were playing on the monkey bars, as we always did. We were all scared of the woman as police dogs searched the apartments. Before I got called to come to bed they found her. She was hiding in a cupboard and was almost dead from taking a handful of pills. As they dragged her past us her she looked limp and pale. It was almost more horrifying than the man with a knife in his stomach.
