Question Dopey, Bashful, Grumpy...Deceit, lust, Envy.

I Was watching the league of gentlemen, a British comedy, and one of the characters was talking about snow white and confused the seven dwarfs with the seven deadly sins.

Is it a coincidence that there are the same amounts of dwarfs than there is sins? I have searched the internet but have found nothing.

I dunno, but I've decided they each have a striking medical issue. Narcolepsy, antisocial personality disorder, obesity, avoidant personality disorder, mental retardation, a bad stammer and allergies...

I don't know that they're very sinful, though.

It's not about them being related to the sins.
Things just come in sevens.
For some reason, people can remember things by sevens easier than, say, by sixes.
This is why there are so many sevens in everything:
The seven seas.
The seven colors of the rainbow (we could easily have divided light into eight colors, or broaden each to fit six categories, but we don't)
The seven musical notes (just as the colors)
The seven sins
The seven fruits of the spirit
Forgiving someone seventy times seven
Et all

I've also heard them referenced as symptoms of cocaine addiction.

I love The League of Gentlemen.

The writers of the show were probably aware of the joke you mentioned, so they used it in the show.

Yessss, I rather enjoyed the series.
It was tragic that it ended after three seasons, but I couldn't agree more with the ending of the last episode.

He is the best! He is the one who inspired me to get a belt buckle.
Papa Lazarou is standing with an old lady, Annie Rains, from the audience. Lazarou is in the middle of his psychic display.

Papa Lazarou: I sense grief…are you grieving?

Annie: Yes.

Papa Lazarou: I sense it was for someone close.

Annie: Yes, my husband, George.

Papa Lazarou: Was it…your sister Mary?

Annie: No! It were my husband, George!

Papa Lazarou: So…who is this Mary?

Annie: I don’t know!

Papa Lazarou: Then why do you grieve for her, so?

Annie: I don’t…

Papa Lazarou: Good. Because she tells you not to grieve…!

He takes a bow to applause from the audience. Annie looks bewildered."
