Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

The second pic is a much better one of her, though her lips still look a bit odd. I like her hat and hair, though.

You have a point there; her skin -does- look fantastic.

Seriously, "my pussy is fierce"? She has become fixated so much that she is that one-dimensional? What makes her better than all those who stay in the closet and feel held back and suppressed? What she has become hasn't liberated her, it has defined her into the most obscene 'barbie doll' ever.
Just look at her. She has completely relinquished human beauty for the sake of being an icon of plasticity, a lie of what a woman ideally should mutilate herself to become, one lie that was fabricated by the same society LGBT maintains puts them down as second class citizens. She is no triumph; she is exactly the ultimate loss for transsexuals in the eyes of society.
And don't say I'm reading too much into it, because it's still true.
|
This is more or less exactly what I'm thinking - claiming to be liberated doesn't mean shit if you're "out there" conforming to the most misogynistic ideals the dominant culture has to offer. "My pussy is fierce" is not in this context a self-affirming statement, it's a gratuitous exploitation of the most arbitrary definition of femaleness. She's no better than the goddamned Spice Girls and their incessant caterwauling about "Girl Power" as they pandered to every male fantasy you can possibly embody with five women.

It's not a "practice".

Apathy's_Child: If I'm misunderstanding you, then feel free to correct me. It sounds like you are saying that someone can't be feminine and purposely attractive to the opposite sex and still be an outspoken feminist. [By "feminist" here, I mean those who are for true equality rather than those who are for women ruling over men.]

No, not at all. A cornerstone of feminism is the freedom to express yourself through any look you choose, though the tricky part is separating your own choices from those which are fed to you by society. (I guess that goes for guys as well, but less so, since we don't have thousands of years of oppression up against thirty to forty years of attempted rectification.)
What I'm saying is that I don't think a woman who chooses to embody male fantasy to the point where she looks like a walking Barbie doll should necessarily be held up as an LGBT hero, just because she happened to make a ton of money from a song about her own cunt. All shitty musicians are whores - the fact that what she's selling out is her own body is incidental. As Jillian pointed out, she's embodying the values of the very culture which has historically oppressed the LGBT community; my point is, let's not mistake her for some inspirational warrior of alternative sexuality just for having enough business savvy to realize that most people are stupid.

It's not terribly feminist if you're going to extremes to conform to such "feminine" beauty ideals, because you're just widening the gap between masculinity and femininity.
Edit: nevermind, posted too slow.

Excuse me, she is not famous for making "a song about her own cunt". She also has two songs: My Hair looks Fierce and Champagne. She also has a remix CD out called Fierce Pussy.

Uni: I don't really think the titles of those songs and that album really help to show her in a less shallow light..

Thanks for reinforcing my point about her lack of talent, it makes my argument even more solid.

Hehe Mr E Nigma, yeahhh. x
Tam Li Hua, we all know she's shallow. But I want to prove that she's not a disgrace to t-ladies. Its okay to be shallow and vain! Celebrate and enjoy it! So long as you're a down to earth person at the end of the day. x

Okay bitch, I guess it just seems that you have different values to me. I think people should be whatever the fuck they want to be and not be chastised or judged for it. Everyone's not like you.

Beautiful sentiment, doll - would have been even more powerful if not prefaced with the address "bitch", but yes, you're right, we have extremely different values. For example, I value musical talent.

Uni: Having confidence in yourself is one thing, but personally I don't like hanging around extremely shallow and vain folk.
Edit: If you want folks to take you seriously, you're going to -have- to stop calling them rude names.

Do you know how much talent goes into perfecting your personal image to such a high standard? And scratching your way out of a drug fuelled 90s club scene to one of the most identifiable fashion muses of today? She's a model too, but you'd probably think there's no talent in that either.
