I liked number 6, 7, and 9.

But anyway....I agree with Jill and Mick.

Tophat: $10
Bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry: $200+
Approximate total (for the past year): $1,028 US

And this doesn't even include music, concert tickets, incense, posters, skulls, ravens, gothic cross decorations for the home and office...

hey, I know it is hard to find that perfect style and when you do, really, REALLY hard not tp shell out the bucks, but:

Czechoslovakian virgin wool trench found at Savers thrift store: $6
Levi jacket i've had for five years easily modified: $29 dollars new, and it already has that "authentic" worn look.
steel toe Doc Martens: $128, but free because my company pays for work boots :P
t-shirts : 1 pack black t's $4, other cool band shirts found at thrift stores, yard sales, etc., maybe $15
Shirts: same as above, also two longsleeve polartec military style thumbhole long-john shirts, partly silk, free, practically new, through Freecycle ( a great resource if there is a group in your area).
Pants: same as above, plus a wonderful pair of faux leather pants for $10, same source., and two pair cammie pants, also from freecycle.
Belts: same as above.
Jewelry: homemade, plus some made from found objects, reclaimed beads, reworked second hand items, and family hand-me-downs.

Hats: found great vintage ones in same as above.

second hand sewing machine to customize everything: $20

lace, findings, fabric accessories, jewelry making supplies, fabric, etc., much of which was found second hand or on clearance: maybe $100 (that's my weak spot, but it covered over half the christmas presents i gave this year too :P )

so, a wardrobe for under $200......this year. and i still manage to "scare" the crap out of my co-workers....although that may have more to do with mentioning i make custom bondage-style jewelry....and like knives, want to learn gunsmithing, etc.

All i'm saying is you don't HAVE to fork out the cash, although it is fun once in a while, especially if you find the "perfect" thing.

as for labels, they are useful. classification can describe things. but, some things are beyond classification. or don't fit the system built to classify them. the whole goth label thing is just something kind of fun, and could help a little in describing personal interest.

Im a jeans and t-shirt one, mostly, with a little bit of cyber , along with some deathrock/Punk. I dress however i want to. But the Romantic Goth style is one of my favorites, i just don't have the money or the talent to pull it off.

I don't understand how that goes.

I find these sub-labels to the subculture useful only when shopping for clothes on the internet. I couldn't use them for people since most don't fit into just one of the categories. It's sort of like trying to classify someone by clothing brands: "I know you're kinda preppy, but are you a Calvin Klein or Abercrombie and Fitch?". Someone can favour those brands, but no one 'becomes' them.

From the list, I favour mostly Romantic Goth, Corporate Goth and Deathrock styles in my wardrobe. Other elements make appearances though. It's really quite a mess sometimes.

I don't really see how the picture below would classify "hippy" as a gothic clothing style. I always imagined upon hearing the term hippygoth, that the wearer of such a style would be dressed in dark tie-dyes, a lot of beads perhaps? I always imagined a few more bright colours and wools, less makeup, things like that. Well, that's the image that comes to my mind anyway!!!!

I read a new one on the 'net last night:
"Beat-Goth". Probably the closest in terms of fashion to what I am.

Is there Silent Era Goth? You know, style taken from the 20s and 30s?

I seem to mostly dress Hippy Goth judging by those pictures, but I didn't realize it was called that. I'm sure not a hippy.

The silent era goth is goth in general. I think anyway. The idea of bright eyes and lips, and white faces came from silent movies. Or so it seems.

Well, if I have to label myself (which would be just as useful as it seems to be in Hazie's case) it would be something like "individualistic DIY-ing sometimes- androgynous- looking romantic fairy- rocker- fetish goth with an affection for the clothing of the Medieval ages and of old black- and- white movies". Still, I find this somewhat limiting, considering that I often just wear whatever baggy clothes I can find when I'm at home, and just skipping the make- up and pretty much everything else when I know I won't be going outdoors that day anyway...

Yay! Pretty ladies make heart happy! ...But ah yeah. Drat, I still tend to fall into the corporate-goth look without the cool trench coat. ...One of these days I'll save up the money for one.

I don't really know what category I fall into, and I don't really care as I find it a bit ridiculous labeling my sense of style. I just wear whatever I feel comfortable in.

As I consider it, "labels" do serve a purpose, and that's categorizing similar concepts, styles, etc. We use it all the time; it's the difference between animals and cars. What's tricky is deciding on an official name for these concepts as they become more specific and obscure. I don't mind labeling - but what I dislike is mislabeling, which includes stereotyping.

Anyway, playing within these rules, I must teeter somewhere between Androgyn, Corporate Slave, and a Jeans and T-shirt goth. Given unlimited time, money, and resources however, I'd have a broader range.
