Too late to edit, I should add that I do like the guy, the way I do like elderly old coots. He's wise in some ways and other times he makes me facepalm. You could excuse his "no recreational sex ever" policy for Buddhists, but that attitude is pretty damaging to Buddhists, I've talked to gay Buddhists who thought they could never become enlightened and felt ashamed because of the Dalai Lama's (and their own lama's) opinion on the matter.

What I'm trying to say is I'm Team Thay all the way.

But its really the homophobic statements that grinds my gears, particular because he says "Buddhism says its wrong". Well no, Tibetan Buddhism generally does out of cultural stigmas but Buddhism at large says nothing about it, nothing in the Pali canon and I think maybe one of the more obscure Mahayana sutras might possibly say something about it, but thats about it. Its the "well BUDDHISM says it don't blame me" bit that is so fricken cowardly. Part of the reason I do have a lot of respect for Thich Nhat Hanh is that he's not afraid to stick up for LGBT issues and say things like "God is a lesbian."

Don't forget the classic "Because your a women, you can't become enlightened" mentality/social status (can't think of the correct term). Think I read about it in something from Tenzin Palmo had written, where the nuns were serving refreshments to the monks and not involved in a conference.
