I think I like Goths
Acutally, I always have, and being in this forum has confirmed what I believed already: Goths are typically more intelligent and creative than most people. I'll bet there's a lot of artists in here, probably a lot of writers, too.
I'm a goth at heart (That is I have both Addams Family DVDs, the Crow, and I like Manson, NIN, the Cure...graveyards, ghosts, psychic shit, and I have a black cat named Muerto...all the important qualifiers). And I want you to know that when Goths rise up like Night of the Living Dead and take over the world, I'm behind you all the way!
Seriously though, I am glad to be here and this is by far the most intellectual group I've been in. Kudos.

Oh! I forgot my question: So, anyone an artist or a writer? If so, what kind? If not, what do you do?

I paint my world with words. Go to the poetry forum if you're looking for gothic writers. Welcome. Amo tu gato.

I never could draw but I imagine and try to paint with words and theories.

I identify as a goth, so I suppose that encountering someone who believes this is satisfying to me on some level, but I feel the contention that goths are generally more intelligent than the remainder of the populace is totally unjustifiable, dude. I'd say, honestly, that the intelligence of the average individual with an interest in the goth subculture is absolutely equatable to the intelligence of the average individual who lacks that interest. The idea that goths are more 'creative' is a somewhat more feasible one, as goths are naturally drawn to creative pursuits; however, the fact remains that they don't excell in those pursuits with any more frequency than do people completely unconcerned with goth (at least, in my opinion. If everything on the literature forum seems like a masterpiece to you, then to each his own). Plus, just think of some of your favorite living writers, artists, and intellectuals- they all probably lived through the 80's, but the majority of them likely aren't goth.
Anyway, I definitely don't mean to sound all hostile or anything in your welcome post, that idea just struck me as slightly bizarre.

I can't believe no one has pointed this out yet...
While you are free to enjoy Manson, he does not fall within the genre of goth rock. Bands like Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy do... Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_rock for more info.
Oh, and I like goths too

I've actually never met another goth in person. I'm not an artist or a writer, but I like writing (not journals, they're icky) and I have a few of my own DIY clothes/jewellery...does that count?

I'll bite; I enjoy writing poetry, and you'll find much of it on this site. I typically like to find inspiration in Shakespeare and Sappho's writings (for Shakespeare, particularly ROMEO AND JULIET), but I also can get more experimental. I've been at it for about six years (My profile will tell you that I'm sixteen now.), so my writing's changed significantly since I first started.

I wouldn't go so far as to call myself an artist because I don't feel worthy yet of the title. I do love to draw and I'm getting better at it with practice, mostly graphite and colored pencils. I would like to get into painting, but that's a step that will have to wait.
Cameras, keyboards (of the computer variety) and pens (for writing) are my other mediums of choice.

I love art.
As I said in my intro post, I love surrealism and fantasy art. It's so beautiful and chaotic.

It was the air of creativity that first drew me towards Goth, in a very roundabout way - around here, anyone that isn't trackie-clad or fashionable is labelled Goth, and as an outsider to the subculture I didn't know any better. However this lead me to look into what Goth meant, and I liked what I found, so it's all good in the end.
Must stop waffling.
I'm an art student, specialising in drawing in every sense. I'm fond of classical and some modern art, especially Dada and Surrealism. I'm not too fond of dirty scrubbers who put their unmade bed on display though. I also dabble with knitting and writing.

I suppose you're right, but many of the replies in this string indicate that the people here are into art and/or writing. Nevertheless, you are correct: I don't know any famous authors or artists who are goth, except for musicians; they're artists, afterall.
I did read all the replies, and I will check out the poetry section.
Thanks.

Ah, yes and they do go down marvelously with a good red wine!
On the question - I am a classical pianist, dabble in writing and graphic design, and I love to draw dragons of all sorts and celtic knots. That's about it from my 'arty' side.

I enjoy creative arts (anything from drama, poetry, body art, painting, beading, sidewalk chalk, whatever). I really appreciate your words Geist. Most of my friends have learned that the Gothic subculture is more intellectual, open-minded, and appreciative of all beauty than they originally thought. Tell you friends.

Thank you Cyntrox for pointing that out. For a while I was starting to think I was the only one who caught that. I'm not gonna go on because it will quickly turn into a punishment party. (I've been spitting hot fire lately.) So.... I will take my leave

I can only speak for the northeastern coast of the US (NJ and northward)...but spend any prolonged amount of time going to goth clubs, and you will quickly find the "goths are more creative and intelligent" myth disproved. There are plenty of sheeple who wear it as a uniform, and plenty of "artists" and "performers" in the scene who are complete and utter hacks.
Stereotypes are stereotypes, whether it's "SEXXXY DETH CHIX" or "GOTHS ARE WICKED SMAHT."
