What the hell is "gothic-punk"?

Seriously... What is that? I thought goth rock was pretty damn punky anyway. So... what the deuce is this?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Drop Dead Festival said they play that now.

I have no idea what that is, but it's probably just as ridiculous and the "mallgoths" who claim to be "goth/punks, whatever i dont label myself!"

Something along the lines of Punk/Emo, but not as bad.

It's a tautology made up by idiots, seeing as Goth came directly from Punk.

Something invented by idjits who just can't suppress their urge to categorize everything just for the sake of earning scene points.

ETA: And obviously haven't heard of horror punk and deathrock, but I imagine this bit is more open to foreign influences than horror punk.

Uh... you guys, if Drop Dead's talking about playing it there's basically NO CHANCE AT ALL it has anything to do with emo or mallgoth idiocy. Drop Dead Festival is about as far as you can possibly get from all of that shite.

To me 'gothic-punk' doesn't look all that stupid as a genre name, just not as specific as most other terms. Sounds like a deathrock or horrorpunk type thing, probably includes both.

And most 'gothic rock' really isn't all that punky... especially post-Sisters of Mercy. That's why deathrock is considered the punkier side of goth.

Well, I'm really not going to debate that there's a difference between goth and deathrock. I've yet to really pinpoint it myself, but it's starting to make more sense to me.

The best way I can make sense of it is that there's a huge difference betwixt The Cure and Siousxie Sioux against Christian Death and Sex Gang Children.

I'd really need an example of what gothic punk would be. I'd probably confuse it with deathrock or horrorpunk myself.

Intuitively I'd probably give bands like Antiworld and 45 Grave as examples of gothic punk, though I might not have the same idea of it as the Drop Dead folks. As I said before, it would have to either include or heavily overlap deathrock and/or horrorpunk.

And I reckon you've got a good idea of deathrock in your Cure+Siouxsie/CD+Sexgang example. There's a huge amount of overlapping with all the deathrock, tradgoth and batcave bands though, which is what leads to all the confusion. It's really all a mess of silly words.

It's a term invented by the musically ignorant to describe bands like A.F.I, My Chem Romance, etc. I see it all the time on Rateyourmusic.com, but when major publications like Revolver and Rolling Stone magazine start using bogus terms like "goth metal" and "spookycore", it really begins to be a problem.

I would disregard any of these new genres. 90% of the time it's all bullshit used to coin this new rock music coming out.

No, The Damned were punk, turned into goth. Don't argue with me on this JCC.

Yeh I would have said maybe gothic punk is something like 45 Grave or Voodoo Church perhaps. Deathrock confuses me though, I can never tell where it actually becomes punk rather than deathrock on one side (Rudimentary Peni?), or what it is about less-punkish bands that makes them count as being deathrock.

Doesn't really matter though, tis all good whatever people are calling it.

If you hate genres then why are you on the music board of a goth literature website?

And now Gothcore has been added to the vernacular. [SARCASM] I'm soooo confused! [/SARCASM]

Gothcore is mallgoth. There appears to be no difference. Except some descriptions call it a mix between goth and hardcore (TSOL obviously don't count...) but all the band lists are Slipknot, Manson, COF etc etc.

Why mallgoth needed another name I don't know.

I'd have thought it a way to describe music that shares qualities of gothic and punk rock, but I might just be underthinking it.

On the positive end, it sounds like it could be either tradgoth or deathrock.

On the negative spectrum, mallgoth.

I'm still trying to understand what the fuck is up with "Gothic Industrial"

Gothic Industrial is just as stupid. What's more, "Gothic Industrial" just seems to be some sort of harsh EBM or trance.

Who'da thought black clothing and bondage gear would be so inviting to the easily confused?

Someone show me a modern goth or deathrock band that wears flannel and blue jeans.

I always thought that "gothic industrial" referred to bands like In Strict Confidence, Blutengle, Diorama etc.

And I was being overly dismissive, Electro. I'm not hating that much. Just disillusioned by a lot of shit.

Personally, I was convinced that Blutengel was darkwave. Never heard of In Strict Confidence or Diorama, though I'm guessing that they're also darkwave acts.
