Self teaching

Since my school has decided to kick French from the curriculum, and go with Spanish, I'm considering on teaching myself. I'm generally travel to French speaking areas more than Spanish speaking areas. Any ideas/tips for programs or textbooks or ways to learn French without spending some outrageous price, as in money wise?

U-Torrents.

Also, listening to French music can't hurt. You could try just learning Spanish, as the Romantic languages are quite similar. I'm learning Spanish right now and my knowledge of French is greatly aiding my progress in Spanish.

Eg: Tener, Venir, Dormir, Lire (Leer) have the same meaning in the infinitive form but change/sound different for the various tenses.

If you travel to French speaking places then the best way for you to learn is immersion, it can be overwhelming at first but if you start out with an extremely basic understanding you will be able to pick thing up rather quickly (though it does help to have a bilingual friend around to help you out when you need it).

True, nothing beats immersion, a place to stay and a good Dictionary.
