Okay, so my Girlfriend has been unemployed and job searching since, like December. She's sent out like 75 resumes and received only TWO legitimate interviews. The rest of the people who contacted her have been scammers, posting fake office jobs on craigslist, monster.com, etc.
Normally they have been pretty easy to spot, as they'll contact her by email or phone, promise her a ridiculously lucrative job and then try to trick her into going to a specific website and filling out a "Background check" or "credit report", which of course we don't do because we're not idiots.
Yesterday, they took it to a whole new level, this company called her, conducted a very brief phone interview and told her they wanted to interview her for a "Corporate Receptionist Position" and told her to come down to their offices at
42 Street (yes they actually have rented space and set up an office) they told her that for this job she needed a NYState Security Guard Certification, and she needed to bring them $78 Cash or Money Order for it (Red flag right there). We were suspicious, so my Girlfriend called back and asked for their company name so she could do some research before the interview (She does this for every job she applies for). The woman sputtered and then mumbled something about them being a "Security" and how they were accredited by the NYS Criminal Justice department, then with no prompting told her "What we do is very ethical". RED FLAG.
Anyway, we looked them up online,
they go by like 3 separate names apparently they've swindled folks out of 1000+ dollars by promising them a job and then selling phony security accreditations that aren't needed for the jobs they've placed.
When my g/f didn't show up for her interview they called and left us a nasty voicemail message.
Anyway, I called the NYPD, The FBI, The NYS Better Business Bureau, and the Federal Trade Union and registered tips/complaints with each. Hopefully someone will do something about these crooked fuckers, because it seems like they're targeting immigrants and desperate job-searchers.
