Better Band Name

So the band that I'm a part of has some tension between some members about the name. Our current band name is Pleasant Road. The story behind it is that there was a double ax murder at a home on the street near us with the same name. Haunted House and I personally don't like the name because it sounds like a band that would play in a nursing home for the elderly. The band name we had in mind was 'Hypnic Jerk'. Its the name of a sleeping disorder involving spasms during the sleep cycle, but it could also have a double meaning involving being a jerk to someone while they sleep. Hah. So what name would fit better for a band who is doing their best to play deathrock?

Pleasant Road sounds too sunny for my taste.

I like the name Hypnagogic or Hypnagogic Sensation. Hypnagogic sensations are vivid dream-like experiences that you have as you're dropping off to sleep. They can include sleep paralysis, a feeling of impending doom, a sensation of falling and unexplained fear.

I think that all pretty much sums up Death Metal.

What about "Grippe"? The homonym, "grip", is hard, hot, sex, passion... And "grippe" is a disease. I like it.

I really like that. Its a bit short though, but if it comes down to it I'd hope we can incorporate it into either the name or a song.

You could do something along the lines of "Get a Grippe", which is only funny if you're dumb like me...

I always liked bands with shorter names. I hate the long names that everyone abbreviates, because I don't always recognize the abbreviations right away. And there's something to be said for a concise name.

Its understandable. I guess I just like band names with more than one sylibol. And "Get a Grippe" would make for some nice song content. Hahaha. We have a currently lyric-less song that is open for that.

go with something more brutal if you're playing death metal. axe murdering influences call for names that involve the words "death, muder, and guts."

Who the HELL said we'd be playing death metal?!? No offence to anyone who likes it, but it pretty much sucks. I said deathROCK. Theres a world of difference. Loud, angry, distortion and disgusting screams (that somehow pass for music) versus spooky, eerie, tribal instrumentation and jittery high-pitched vocals? Sorry, but I prefer the latter.

Subtlety is the thing…I think the first one has a nice background. Though DHD’s suggestion was quite interesting, short and sweet…

I think both of them sound kinda cruddy. The second one sounds both hard to pronounce and hard to remember, so that's not good.

You could always name your band after a favorite song of yours (like the band Ghost Dance named themselves after Death Cult's only album). Of course, you'll want a name that is both cool and easy to remember. One idea I had for a future band is "White Raven". That might be a good choice for you guys.

Well, "brutal" isn't exactly a word to describe deathrock. Do you even know the difference between goth music and metal?

Deathrock has been around much longer than death metal and they have nothing in common with each other. Essentially, deathrock is goth with a more punk ethic to it. It commonly involves rock organs in its music, its fashion can be described as "zombified, androgynous punk" and it's just a very widespread genre altogether.

I actually like the sound of Pleasant Road. It's ironic, and only deceptively 'sunny' sounding. It also has a history behind it and would stand out nicely amongst all the Phantom Limbs and Devils Whorehouses.

And wasn't it Beavis with the 'deathrock' shirt? I have a feeling it wasn't referring to real deathrock...

I do prefer Pleasant Road. The irony in the name reminds me of Bauhaus.
If you include the word grippe, then there's a lot of things, from something a little clichéd (Zombie Grippe) to something more peculiar (Thursday's Third Grippe [no idea what that means])

Heh, actually the story behind Pleasant Rd. is cool, but I agree with you, about the name. When I saw "Pleasant Rd.", it reminded me of a nursing home that is located on Pleasant Home Rd. :}

Actually, I don't have any suggestions... it should be decided between yourself and your band. If there are still disagreements about the band name, then all of you should try and compromise and if that fails, draw names out of a hat. :}

I'm pretty sure that the only thing deathrock in Bevis and Butthead was when they watched Alien Sex Fiend's video for "Now I'm Feeling Zombiefied".
