Shill Post your website announcements here. Anything that is blatantly SPAM (nigerian schemes, make money fast, etc) will be deleted. Actually, we'd probably keep the nigerian schemes around to make fun of it. |

Gothic 'zines
Couldn't help but notice a recent resurgence in Gothic magazines with the likes of Devolution, Insomnia, Gothic Beauty, Unscene etc...
Any 'zines you'd suggest checking out ?

Good question, you've got my attention....
Better question, where the hell can you find any gothic magazines? Any stores that normally carry them, or do you have to have them delivered?

Gothic Beauty is my favorite. Attractive goth girls and great articles.
Haven't found them in any stores though, I've had to order them online.

Sadly, I'm aware that some of them can be bought at Hot Topic.
(I say "sadly" because I simply cannot stand the place. But I wanted to know if they had a copy of the JTHM Editor's Cut (or whatever it's called... the hardcover one), and since JTHM would be over with the magazines... Sad, no?)

Interesting, free Voltaire stuff for signing up (next 100 people)
I wonder if we have any famous goths who paruse the forum but hide in the shadows? I think it'd be neat if they'd actually stop in and say hello if they do

The history of goth magazines (in the US at least) has unfortunately been spotty at best, and with little substance to be found. Here's what I recall of the past magazines:
Propaganda - 80s to late 90s, before format changed
The earliest "established" goth magazine was Propaganda, which had lots of great black and white eye candy but left much to be desired on the writing end of things. However, it was really the only window on the US goth scene (particularly in L.A.) at the time. Sometime in the mid-90s Propaganda went color, and along with that it stepped away from the focus on goth into a focus on mostly androgynous erotica (which had always been there, but now became the main theme without the goth elements). It seems to have ceased publication now.
Ghastly - early 90s to early 2000s
Ghastly was similar in format to Propaganda, also focused heavily on the L.A. goth scene, but was always a notch above Propaganda in content.
Permission - early to late 90s, re-launched in 2004 with format change
Permission was really more of a industrial/goth magazine, with emphasis on the "industrial" part. It later started publication again as a completely non-goth fashion magazine.
Dark Angel - mid to late 90s
Very short-lived, and somewhat similar to Permission. I can't remember much more about it.
Carpe Noctem - mid to late 90s
Some of you may remember Carpe Noctem, which appeared in the later 90s and was around for a few years. It had some okay to excellent articles (one on "Gothic Parenting" springs to mind), and I was sad to see it go.
New Grave - 2000 to ?
I don't remember seeing this one around, but apparently there were 6 issues total. Devoted to gothic rock and death rock. Might have been decent, now defunct.
And now the recent crop of goth magazines:
Gothic Beauty - 2000 to present
Gothic Beauty is about as glossy and vapid as a publication can get. Apart from the eye candy factor (which is high), there is really very little substance to it.
Drop Dead - 2005 to present
Now this is more like it! Focused on the current Death Rock revival, this zine is as much about the future as it is the past, with a heavy emphasis on DIY and the punkier side of goth. Good stuff.

I loved MorbidOutlook, I've sent my work there various times yet none of the attempts were successful. Also, Skot, what about MeltDown? I like GB.

Gothic Beauty is nice.
My personal favorite is Cure. It's a Japanese goth mag.

What about ezines? The only ones I know of is Morbid Outlook and Gothic Angst Zine (angst-zine.com) and they are just not enough...

I adore Gothic Beauty.
But mostly I read tattoo magazines.

Thank you for the spot! I've been meaning to get back over here and start looking for writers to publish in the literature section! Also, we have a new wiki! It's called the Gothiki and we need people who have something to say about the scene to come and write about it! Check it out:
The Gothiki
Once again, thanks, and if there are any writers that would like to be publish in the webzine, please let me know:

Ever have one of those days? It was supposed to be "published" not "publish." It's been a long day.
