Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

SlipKnoT
I just wanted to ask to all the metal heads on the forums, what makes SlipKnoT not metal? I can't see how they aren't metal...and don't give me that "it's metalcore or whatever" bullshit...cos it still has the word metl in it...so it makes it metal...so what exactly makes in not metal?

As far as I know, Slipknot is Nu-metal. In my opinion, they kind of suck, but they're still metal.

My point exactly, and yes they are kind of starting to suck, I hope they improve with their new album

Starting to suck? They've sucked from the get-go.
But yeah, Slipknot is nu-metal. I never got how nu-metal was considered part of metal, though.

I quite like Slipknot. Started out hating them because I was trying to be tr00, but when my music horizons broadened I began to like them.
And yeah, they are inevitably metal, regardless of how much metallers hate them. It's the same with Bullet For My Valentine, I can't stand them, but they evidently are metal.

I'm not a fan of "nu metal". Frankly all the bands are sonic poachers and stole a good chunk of their sound from Helmet. Not the rap part, but the downtuned guitars and sound structures. Thats what I think anyways.

The reason people say that the suck and they aren't metal is for many reasons;
1. The vocals are incredibly poppy. I know how stupid this sounds at first, but listen to the choruses.. poppy.
2. The song structure.. not much more than a pop song.
3. The guitar work is simple, and not very complicated. (on their earlier stuff, more so)
4. The fact that they combine rap and metal- two things that have never really been combined, or even thought about being combined until that point.
5. They're 9 men in masks. I mean come on, the have about 3 people playing percussion. What is it, a mariachi band?

1. The choruses aren't poppy, and especially not the vocals. Obviously there are some parts where the music becomes more accessible, but nobody can compare Slipknot to Amy Winehouse and keep a straight face.
2. The song structure is much more than a pop song. How many pop songs do you know that sounds like Slipknot?
3. Fair enough, but technical complexity doesn't equal good music.
4. Yes they have. Rap and Metal were made to be combined, and really aren't that much by Slipknot. There are far better examples of Rap/Metal crossover, Body Count for example.
5. It's just a gimmick to make the show more entertaining, and from the videos that I've seen of them live, they do seem to put on a pretty good show.

I fail to see how that makes them not metal.

I have seen Slipknot play live ( at Reading festival, I was about in the centre of the crowd ) and they do put on a reasonable show. I expect it would have been better had I seen them at a proper venue. I definitely heard no rap whatsoever, or anything sounding remotely like it. Soggy digestive ( Limp Bizkit ) do shitty rap/metal. I have heard none of that from Slipknot. They may not be much to my taste anymore, I have obviously moved on ( a very long way ) but I still have their albums at the bottom of the cd pile, and have a rare nostalgia moment sometimes. To be fair I have heard far worse than them where Nu metal is concerned. Flaccid hobnob ( see above ) being a prime example.

Wtf. Rap and Metal have been combined since the late 80's and it's been evident and highly publicized in the media. Where the hell have you been?

Honestly though, I think the reason most metallers don't claim them is because of most of the people who like them. I mean, compared to stuff like Opeth, they're completely obsolete, but I'd say they're just as good as some of the bands that metalheads like.
It's the whole nu-metal movement though. Most people hate it.

...why?
I personally can't stand the vocals, but otherwise they aren't the worst band, just not my thing.

Personally, I LOVE SLIPKNOT. I love the heavy (if B tuned guitars and steel kegs arent heavy enough for you you're a freak) sound. I just love them, I love the passion, and the energy, and all the drums! ^_^

I agree.
It used to annoy the crap out of me in school when I heard somebody playing SlipKnot. I could feel my brain seeping out of my ears most days
