What happend to oppen minded people??

Now i know some will mistake this for whining but... dude what happend to people who are really open minded of others? i mean today at lunch we had to sit with new people and well... man it was hard for me... every time i would start to sit with a group of people they all turned to me and gave me a dirty look. was it because i have on a wednesday 13 shirt or what? i mean c'mon i am just trying to do some good around this hell whole... grrr i hate how people are today... why can't we all just be open minded like we used to be?? its like the 50's all over again!!

It's unfortunate, but this has always been the case since the beginning of time. If someone is perceived as different, they are usually opened up to persecution.

It would be nice for this to change one day....

You're absolutely right. When humans see something different, it confuses them, which leads to fear, then hate. It's just human nature to be intolerant. Only true saints and deep thinkers even TRY to look beyond what their instinct tells them about someone.

"Only true saints and deep thinkers even TRY to look beyond what their instinct tells them about someone"

And that is increasingly difficult to accomplish in a world full of sheep, being led to the slaughter.

There was a quote I can't quite remember from the last(first)Star Wars movie...something like "So this is how liberty dies, in a round of applause!)

People instinctually dehumanize others who do not conform to a standard group perspective of behaviour. Quite literally, intellectual might makes right...if the masses concur to a particular doctrine, then it is typically law regardless of what minorities may have to say about it. I'm talking to you, wikipedia. Commercialism, hedonism, you name it...people are not aware that they're being indoctrinated, because the media produces shows which empower people who feel that they're experiencing ineptitudes in particular roles in life (this is especially apparent in children's television; oppressive elements such as parents or teachers are often portrayed as completely unintelligent or downright stupid. See shows like Fairly Odd Parents or Jimmy Neutron to see what I mean). We are entangled in a society of hypocrites that assures itself that it is comprised of 'free' thinkers, whereas this attitude is the greatest hypocrisy of all.

I say we do the best we can and stay open minded then help lead others to that as well. I'm sure once more and more people start to see how much easier life gets once you open your mind, then more will follow. Try to share the open mindedness.

Perhaps open minded people have gone the way of dinosaurs and the idea of starting sentences with capped letters?

I ate them all.
They tasted like Plato.

I'd say we're making progress. Humanity has always been held back by those who refused to look a bit further ahead, or further back. There has always been a good portion of the people, who take what they're handed. There has always been a bigger portion, who not only looks no further, but claims they do in the name of intellectualism.

Yet, we've come to a point, where news ideas can spread quicker then ever before. So, that small minority that actually does question, is slowly becoming bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

I am not a man who has hope for many things.
Humanity, progressing, is one of them.

Sure, it may seem like times are getting rough. Those who would halt progression are flailing Molotov Koktels at the gates, in the name of their God, or their political ideals. It may seem like the stupid and blind are running the world.

But we still have those smart, intelligent few who escape. The ones who run social reforms, and keep us from the apocalypse.

Who knows. Maybe, some scientist, along the way, will make a giant space craft, put a bunch of open minded people on it, and go someone else. Somewhere different from here....

I need to stop reading Foundations.
Still, a man can dream.

I would also agree that the world has become slightly more openminded and thinking in comparason to, lets say, the dark ages .
I very much doubt that we will ever be rid of those that tend to seek out others who appear different to blame all their misfpourtunes on, which is, actually, simply instinctive. Instinct is still outbreeding intellect and I doubt that will change. Lets just wait for the apocalypse...it kind of sounds like more fun

Well, no offence, but isn't that why we dress this way? To show the world that we are confident being what we are and they better come to terms with it? Dressing unlike the average, casual person is always a call for attention with a "huh, so you wanna mess with me" interpretation even though you might not mean it as such. Clothing is a way of communication and you have to know what you're doing when you dress differently.

So, of course, its annyoing when people yell at you for your looks, but you have to admit they do so because you made these looks yourself and becuase you actually "started" the "conversation" just by looking this way. Beayting someone up becuase of their skin colour is something different, for example. So my advice is, if it difficult for you to take all bitching on these grounds with humour then you should try making your appearance less striking. Humans are humans. Their reactions are quite easy to forsee.

You have just proven your own closed mind.

Open-minded people? Most of them are pot-heads, getting stoned in someone's basement.

Can't say I blame them, either.

basement? try front porch! and being a "pot-head", let me be the first to confess that it hasn't really enhanced the open-mindedness.

Eh, everyone has their "spot."

And I never said anything about enhancement.

Yes. But he was bi-polar or something, so weed had the opposite reaction on him.

Does that count?

I guess so... my mom has an anxiety disorder, so when she smokes she has panic attacks. Not that I have ever seen my mom stoned or anything.

If we were all open minded people, wouldn't we be closed minded to closed minded people?

I'd expect it's closer to tolerance than acceptance or lack of caring. And you probably don't go around preaching to them about your views, because you respect them and don't enjoy fighting over it. With strangers though that's a completely different matter, isn't it?

Often, actually.

I'm a nurse and I did some psych work for a while. We would often get patients who would come in suffering from a marijuana induced psychosis and who had become very violent. Most of these were male, aged 14ish - 25ish and who had no history of a mental illness, both personally or in their family.

I'm not anti-MJ, and now that I work in palliative care (care of the terminally ill and dying) I think that it would be better if it were legalised for medicinal purposes and I have seen a LOT of patients with terminal illnesses who would (and have) benefitted from using this drug the same way that they would use any other medication... and like any other medication (or drug) it is dangerous.
