This pisses me off a little
ok so i went to VF for the first time in like 5 months today...
Me: do you like sisters of mercy, bauhaus, or dredsden dolls?
Him: never heard of them
Me: Are you goth?
Him: yea
Me: how do you know?
Him: because I wear black.
Me: ............ :l
But then again, what do you expect out of an ignorant person?
Peace,
Cradle.

AHHAHAH!!...thatīs funny. Iīts the first time I read about a boy who thinks itīs really goth just for using black without saying it in any humorous way.
VF has become the SUCKIEST community. Now, Iīll say DONīT go there anymore XD...unless you just want to laught a bit (thinking again, nah, keep going there and then tell us stories )
With all this emo fashion trend going on...VF couldnīt survive, and now itīs full of the shittiest sh!t.
If you want a good community try Sanctuary.ch
Thanks for making me laught cradle

Rofl, that's VF for you. You should know all VF people are either emo or metal eliteists. Not many goths at all, and the ones who claim to be like non goth bands that they claim to be goth: MM, HIM, Deathstars ect.

Sounds like that guy was pretty clueless, but I'm not hugely into "goth" music yet I associate with goth culture for the intellectual/emotional/creative attributes. Would I not be a goth then simply for not listening to much rock/metal music?

c130- You can be goth without being very into the music, it's the mindset as much as anything, really. But the music helps a lot. And knowing who the bands *are* is important, even if you don't listen to them much. The VF problem is the Mansonites and HIM fans assuming that liking Manson and wearing black makes them goth.
I still use VF... I don't get randomers talking to me, and stick to talking about nothing important with the only other poster on the avapxia cult.
The UK Goths cult isn't bad, though- they even have a warning that when they say goth, they mean Bauhaus and not Manson, CoF, Slipknot, etc.

This is all I have to say.
Preppy jocks think they're hardcore punks. Emo's think they're punks. White people think they're black. So naturally people who wear black become goths! I have figured out the circle of life. "World's smartest person" badge, anyone?

Yeah! I'll waffle a bit too. Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir rule...and, and............well, there's not much more to say to that.
I agree that if you stamp yourself gothic you are a sad and confused wannabe not KNOWING what gothic music is. Of course, I also agree that one DOES NOT have to actually listen to it, but one does have to respect it and understand it to an extent.
AND, I also agree that this subject seem PAINFULLY familiar.

an interesting topic. Myself, i always got upset even through high school if i was ever classified as anything. I kinda blended in with alot of people although i was most commonly active with what stereotypical socialism would dictate as 'goth' or 'freaks'. I always thought labels were silly in general. All a label is really is something for someone to try and harp on other people for how much their supposedly 'not' that label and don't fit the criteria as well as the next person. Its kinda ridiculous if you think about it. Why waste our time trying to convince anyone were 'anything' except who we are. Its like a mask to our true selfs perpetuated by the common conditioning of the envirement around us and its silly subculture customs that dictate our allegiance to a stereotype. I would just talk to a jock the same way id talk to the girl in white make-up and all black. with respect. ^_^ And just take them for who they show me they are - not by appearance or musical preferences.
Then you have the morons like Jillian is mentioning. Unable to function on any level of personality besides what they think will get them accpeted or laid. Silly wastes of flesh that derode their existence and that of others by playing a facade with themselves and everyone else around them. Its a vicious cycle. Thus those of us with minds of our own seclude ourselves from the mainstream to preserve our intellect =P And people wonder why some of us are 'anti-social', lol

This ticked me off a bit. It happened when I had finally dyed my hair dark (not black, though) and I was applying black nail polish and listening to Nightwish:
My brother (4 years older than me): "What's this? You some kind of a teen-angster? You gonna slit your wrists now because the world is such a bad place to live?
Me: Actually, I's gonna let the polish dry and head off to the gym.
Brother: Goths don't go to the gym,
Me: Yeah, you're the one who knows best, aiight? Besides, I'M not the one slitting my wrists because the engine sound of my car is a pitch or two too high.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
I could continue our conversation forever. Even though he's 22 he can be amazingly childish.

There was this kid 2 years younger than me, I was acting all spastic and stuff, and he said:
"Wow."
"What???"
"You're Goth, aren't you supposed to be mopey???"
"You're on crack."
"I was just saying."
"And I'm just saying that just because I dress a little darker than the rest of the world doesn't mean I want to cut myself and I act all dark all the time."
"Okay, I'm sorry."
"You should be punk."
Yeah, little kids need to get a life.

Ugh, they are everywhere!
Even if I try to speak up, it's in one ear, and out the next.
In the past years, there were three girls who all wore pentacles and said they practiced "witchcraft". They would forever draw pentacles all over the school, bathroom stalls, and on desks. They gave such an untolerate reputation that many other students kept asking me if I do the same!
Blah.

I got so sick of VF, everyone there is all rate me please, like having everyones stamp of approval means something. Fuck that! Plus all the weak little cutters crawling out of every little corner of the place like roaches. Everyone seems so preoccupied with how to classify themselves these days. If you live the goth lifestyle for many years and look at the state of things now you have to kind of laugh at it all. People 25 years ago just wanted to kick our asses, they didn't care what we labeled or sub-labeled ourselves and indeed for us there was no label, we simply found a way of life that best fit us and allowed us to express ourselves in a way we felt most comfortable. Personally I live in a way that feels natural to me. I know I am living the lifestyle that I was meant to live and I will remain this way to the end. I'm thinking of tattooing my eyeliner on, but I'm afraid of poking myself in the eye, I still have to get my nerve up for that one. I have a really cool design in mind though. I'm rambling now....VF does suck!!

Why is it that people freak out when someone is going down the street and looks different than them. My family is a bunch of over religious freaks and always freak out when I come out of my room in something black it may just be my hat or pants. It's gotten to the point that I now hide all of my true gothic clothing in my closet and put them in my bag before I leave the house and change at my friends house or at work if I am going out. The accuse me of being a devil worshipper just because I am gothic its rediculous. Walking in the mall with my friends is quite fun too because you have the people that will walk to the other side of the walkway just to get away from me. I don't get it I have found that the gothic culture is one of the most friendly cultures around everyone does their own thing and people are respected for being individuals. As for people saying that they are gothic for wearing all black I have found that a lot from the mall kids who shop in Hot Topic to piss off their parents, they don't know who Bauhaus, Dresden Dolls, or Sisters of Mercy.

Whats wrong with this? (apart from vandilisum which is a BAD thing kiddies) The pentacle is a beautifull symbol, or were they just pretending to be wiccan (im just guessing wiccan witchcraft is used in other religons too) to get attention?
