How heavily do you dress?
I see goths that have just jeans, skulls, and make-up with no piercings, but also goths with chains, white face paint, loads of black make-up and...TO MANY PIERCINGS! Out of 10 with 1 rating normal and 10 rating "absolute, total goth" which one are you? I would be 7, if I just worse black make-up, but it looks ugly on me. Oh, if you are 1, it doesn't mean your not goth, you can be more goth than #10, so I hope that no one takes it the wrong way. I don't think all goths express themselves through dressing. I prefer to though.

Everyone knows goths don't use numbers, duh!
Real goths use proper nouns and battery brands to express their inward gothiness. Only real goths understand this form of expression, which is how they recognize each other and find a suitable mate.
How heavily do I dress?

XD Your system fails, I understood it and I don't consider myself goth. Any outsider car crack it. You need a code.

How heavily do you dress?
It depends on the day . I've had whole weeks with victorian dress on , and with jeans and black shirts or corsets ... I change a lot , It depends on my humor ... Makeup? not really , Im too lazy to spend too much time making up ... But the days I'm wearing my dress I feel much better than with the vulgar and plain jeans+shirt ... Again , Im too lazy ...

I think you're misidentifying black metal kids as goths. Common mistake, really; they probably think they're goth, too. They're not.
You should look up some pictures of Siouxsie for makeup tips.

I normally don't dress heavily. I'll wear black eyeliner, and frilly shirts and long, swishy skirts, but I don't go all out. I have no piercings at all... I'll wear pinstripe pants, shirts, and occasionally a pair of tripp pants that aren't loaded down with mountains of chains and studs, and other gaudy knickknacks. And I always wear my boots....
So yes, not too heavily.

I agree with delicti. I am mostly goth, but I used to listen to only black metal, and I dress in tripp/illig pants, chains, etc., though I now only usually wear camo pants and black shirts.

Much as you irritated me on your intro thread, there does seem to be some hope yet.

Sorry. I suppose I forgot about the fashion thread. And whoever said that goths don't use numbers in being really stereotypical. It's probably mostly true but, who cares if I just used numbers?

Because clearly no goths ever dress in that style, and one would never confuse the two .
And to answer the original question - in my experience, those who wear extensive makeup and over-the-top clothing 24/7 are usually new to the scene and overly enthusiastic (or trying too hard, depending upon your interpretation). I saw some 13 year old kids with their mom in the grocery store wearing skull gloves, lots of chains, etc. and I just wished I had a camera. MUST BE TEH UBAH GOFFIK WHILST BUYING MAH FROSTED FLAKES!!!11!!
Notable exceptions are people who work in creative industries - i.e. goth clothing store owners, makeup artists, costume designers - who can get away with being gothed up all the time. I say more power to them. But there is no fucking way I would ever devote that much time to being gothed up; I'm sick of spending 1-2 hours doing it before the club, nevermind if I were to do it everyday.

It takes me forever to get ready as well. I'm ususally dressed business casual from Monday to Friday. If I go out on the weekends, my outfits vary, depending on what I'll be doing, and depending on the level of comfort I want to achieve.

I never said that, however I don't want a bunch of Goths to get all uppity on me for "misleading their style"

An excellent point. Original poster whose name I can't be bothered to remember, do you see your little avatar picture? That is called corpse paint, and THAT is a trademark of black metal. I confused the two a lot when I first came on this site, but now I realized I'm far more a black metal kid than a goth, though i still love goth culture.
