Taunted as a 'nerd,' sailor drives across USA and burns down man's home
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline...d-as-a-ne.html
ohn Anderson called Russell Tavares a "nerd" while they were chatting on the Internet. In response, the Waco Tribune-Herald says the 25-year-old sailor drove from Virginia to Texas and burned down his taunter's trailer.
“There was no real fight other than I called him a nerd,” Anderson, 59, tells the Tribune-Herald. “And then he said he was going to kill me.”
The fire gutted Anderson's mobile home. KCEN-TV says Tavares pleaded guilty to arson and was sentenced this week to seven years in state prison.
Learn more about Tavares at what appears to be his website, under the name PyroDice.

Actualy I think it might be a sort of good thing that will decrease online taunting. Before people never expected somone to actualy try and get revenge.

This happened a few years ago in New Jersey as well. I guy drove a few hundred miles to another mans house and beat him unconscious with a baseball bat because he was making fun of him in an AOL chat room.
Funny thing is, people these days will go through great lengths to hide their IP, and not post personal info in forums, then put everything you ever want to know on MySpace or LiveJ0urnal, and wonder how people find them.
Me? I find it best not to 'attack' people online, that way you never have to end up getting jumped in an alley one day while walking to the shop because of something you said online.
Remember, just because you don't take it seriously, doesn't mean some nutter a few states away might. That nutter also might have a car, a bat, and a lot of free time to hunt you down as well.
Every year there are hundreds of unsolved murders worldwide. I wonder if even a small percentage are caused by situations just like this that, because of the fact the attacker came from so far away and had no direct ties, go unsolved...

Well said! Now, let's get back to ripping each other apart in the political forum! I just hope that no one that posts in there has a lot of free time on their hands.
This reminds of me Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back.

I find it difficult not to admire the guy's persistence. But I think the expression "criminally insane" was invented to describe people like that. Who gets that upset over being called a nerd, anyway?! Hasn't he ever heard of Bill Gates?

We concur.
Articles like this make me wonder just where humanity is headed. . . then shudder involuntarily at the possibilities.

I'm buying a cottage in the Irish countryside, getting a wolfhound, building a stone fence around my property, and then become a hermit.

There's not a day that goes by that I don't suggest that to my husband for after he retires.

A part of me might applaud this guy, if he was responding to greater antagonization. But being called a nerd? That's just overreacting.

Well, that is his attackers words. 'All I said was...' which in reality could mean there was a lot more said.
I mean, the man was in the US military - he was able to get pass that hurdle being as crazy as they accuse him of.
