Southern Gothic literature

Here's a thread about Southern Gothic literature ~ I am relatively new to the genre and I would like some insights from Gnet members.

I came across this online -

Three Southern authors, including Mississippi’s own Barry Hannah, are guests on a new episode of Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s Writers series, airing at 8 p.m. Feb. 1.

“Renegade Writers,” also featuring William Gay and Ron Rash, is the first Writers episode produced since Hurricane Katrina. Host Gene Edwards will interview these three masters of Southern Gothic literature.

For details on each Writers episode, go to www.mpbonline.org.

Anyone heard of these authors? Are they any good? What other Southern Gothic authors would you recommend? What would you say typifies this genre?

One of my favourite books is "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee... Southern Gothic?

THANK YOU! I was talking about this with someone at a party a couple days ago, and we couldn't remember the name or the author or anything except for the plot synopsis.

I guess I get to be the first to sully the list with something in pulp literature. I've enjoyed a number of Robert McCammon's stories, most of which are set in the south.

You might want to check out Caitlin R. Kiernan. Most of her work is set in the American South.
