blahh...
I want to know if this is weird or not. I was talking to my daughter on aim (she's not my biological daughter) and she told me she likes a 'goth' boy. Then she showed me his myspace. He had one of those weird spikey, slanted bang hair styles. I told her he looks weird and emo. (She's 'emo' too she just doesnt want to admit it) She said "No, he's goth, all he cares about is 666."
Ok, I got really mad but I didn't say anything. I associate '666' with satanism ect. I didn't even bother trying to explain to her that just because this kid worships the devil or something doesnt make him goth. Converses..tight colorful shirts, and way to much hair gel do not equal goth to me. She also calls CoF and My Chemical Romance "goth". Is it weird that I feel mad at her when she says things like this?

You could've asked to divulge what exactly '666' means...that term is so freaking overused now, it's practically a trademark. :P

If she insists on being yet another dumb kid, then let her learn through flaming that she is wrong.

Invite her to Gothic.net. We'll educate her.

Don't feel bad. I get pissed off too when kiddilies are blatantly ignorant and refuse to hear common sense.

Feel free to ask her to get her "boyfriend" to join g.net
We'll soon beat some sense into him...

My daughter is the same way, she's an Emo and I am a Goth. She thinks she can be both, I get confused to where she is going with all this. I figure she has her own style and I have mine, settled.
At least my daughter doesn't affiliate herself with the "666" concept too much or cut herself, no worries for me here.

She's certainly wrong, but the differences between goth and emo are not common knowledge I'm afraid =/ I suppose you could do her a favor and educate her, but it'd likely be a vain effort.
Anyway, I do not think it weird that this puts you off.

Emo's suck. You need to teach her what REAL Goth is, and if she hates you for it, tough...Rather you than someone who will be less caring towards her feelings.

youngins need to discover things on their own, and explore them on their own terms. Thinking back to when I was a teenie, if my Mom would have tried to inform me about a subculture or scene, it would have taken the mystique and intrigue out of it for me, and I would have moved on to explore something else entirely. People at that age are still learning how to develop their own identity and taste.
On the other hand, perhaps you could try using reverse-psychology? :-P

True, I did my own thing when I was a teenager myself, (lucky that emos weren't around then, ) I was a Goth/Skater back then. My mother was ok about it, but my step-father never approved and I didn't recall asking for it either.
When it comes to my daughter; I figure if whatever she does is not a matter of life or death, then she can do whatever she wants. I trust that she is responsible and indpendent. Even though I do tend to be a bit protective sometimes.
Perhaps she will "join the Goth side" after she learns more about it.
