Meh. People are afraid of what they don't know.
Plus there are posers out there, giving the real Goths a bad name by kicking the living bejesus out of Neds (Which, might I add, isn't a bad idea. Kicking the living bejesus out of a Ned might actually be fun, considering how many times they've tried to kick the living bejesus out of me).
Anyhoo, not the point.

Because some people are afaid of things they do not understand.
Some people do not know what goth is.
Also some people are prone to twisted judgemental thinking. For example, anyone wearing black worships Satan. Thoughts like that.

Answer:
People are afraid of the unknown.
It is unknown to them why goths dress and act and live the way they do.
If they opened up their narrow minds and used what little empathy they've not wasted over the years, they might not be so afraid.
But then again.
Mallgoths and mopeys pretty much TRY to act like freaks, so I wouldn't put it past the people who shun them.
They set up bias for the real goths.

Because goths are just as pretentious and cliquey as anyone else.
So the real question is; why are we so scared of each other?

What I've noticed is that more mainstream women tend to be weirded out by me, but the men (especially older men) tend to call me "sweetheart" a lot and be flirty.... moreso than when I dressed more "normal". Could it be that I'm giving off that bad girl vibe & they are somehow drawn to that? Like maybe they assume I'm some sort of sexual deviant just b/c of how I dress? I dunno. Perhaps they are just more accepting than women are b/c I'm a woman?

Maybe because they think we're different therefore a threat to them, because they feel they don't understand us, and can't control us...
It never really bothered me, I hardly notice...

getting back to the topic(or not as the case may be) i think mir has a big point, lots of goths although v friendly seem to be constanly trying to be gothier that everyone else most of the time without realising it,and also getting very bitchy when someone dosnt conform to "proper goth".what the hell is up with that?

I think it's just cause women are bitches to each other most of the time.

Linen, if you're pretty and confident--that's why.
Generally, women hate women who are pretty and confident, and men like them.
You dressing more outlandishly not only shows your confidence, it draws attention to it.

Allow me to expand on this if you will.
Generally, people hate people who are pretty and confident. Dressing more outlandishly not only shows confidence, it shows you're also unique and curiously different. This draws even more attention to you, good and bad.

I agree with what most has been said with one major differance. I sincerly believe it's not fear. I have yet to see someone jump out of the way when I happen to catch them off gaurd, I don't see anyone cower or scream, I don't think anyone really drifts to far away from me in that cautious sort of way.
I think it's more or less that they are pestered by goths. people like two things in life: Simplicity and Complexity. Simplicity grants a feeling of completion in the thought process, the 'Oh, Okay so it's like this and that' gratification when something that was purplexing just clicks. They like Complexity too, It gives us a chance to use whatever brainpower that we have left over from our mainstream tasks to create and delve and figure stuff out.
If you deny someone complexity, like locking them in a big simple room, they will go insane, stir crazy. If you deny someone Simplicity, they will crack down understress. we need both for mental health.
I personally think the Gothic trend rose with the invention of technology, the more things are done for us, the more people have a need to complicate things. Sure I could just go out and buy a nice pair of shorts and a nice pair of jeans, but I go through all the tailoring and store hopping anyway, becuase I need to.
as a backlash, however, those who don't need to have that complexity look at it in wonder and it causes a brief strut of complexity in their lives. sure it doesn't matter, but that's why it bugs them so much....

I'm not goth, but when people thought I was because of the black lipstick then people thought I was just a freak. But people think now I'm scary, and I don't even touch black lipstick. It's really just the younger kids in 7th grade though. I live in a small town where most people don't appreciate different things.

Same here. No exaggeration, but apart from myself and two others guys I know, everyone else in my town is a chav (I think that's a 'prep' in America?) When I walked in to get an ice cream last week, a group of the girls just stood with mouths wide open - as you said, my town doesn't appreciate anything out of the norm.
