NEW ORLEANS — In Hurricane Katrina's chaotic aftermath, police shot six people – killing two – as they crossed a bridge in search of food. For years the case was a shocking symbol of the confusion and violence that swept through the flooded city. On Wednesday it became a mark of shame for the police department.

I remember the disdain with which the national media reported this back in 2005. I believe the nicest thing said about the people who related this event was that they were spreading "unfounded rumors". Let's see how many news outlets admit being wrong about this story.

One more thing: I get the feeling New Orleans was lucky authorities nailed this guy for what he did. For those of you who remember the run-up to the riots in Los Angeles back in 1992, you know how badly the population of New Orleans might have taken an acquittal or inaction by the courts over this incident.
