Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

So, does anyone here actually listen to...
...emo?
And by emo, of course, I mean old emotional hardcore bands, like Mineral, Rites of Spring, The Promise Ring, Moss Icon and such.
However, I enjoy second wave emo more, especially Sunny Day Real Estate ( click here for their acoustic version of their song The Ocean).
So, thoughts?
Note: One word about My Chemical Romance and your pulverisation is imminent!

I'm afraid I don't, no. I tried some of it a while back (and, indeed, felt vaguely offended by the strange bastardisation of the original genre into the pop-emo variant that's accepted now), but I just never really got the hang of it.
Welcome, by the way. You are remarkably promising for a new member. It's rare I see a new creature with such common sense and typographic skill.

Oh, thank you.
So did you ever try second wave/indie emo? It is generally more accessible.

I was into emo before I was into goth. Then one day, I thought to myself, "I can wear thick glasses, fringe bangs, and an ironic tee, or I can wear a cape. It's time to make a choice."

I tried to listen to some original emo once, since I generally enjoyed shoegaze and that sort of thing, but it wasn´t really something I liked enough to waste disc space on.

I have the whole Fugazi Discography discography on my computer.
Can't find any rites of spring anywhere but I do like them.
I do really hate how the term's become associated with Pop-punk crap though.

I don't listen to emo, not the My Chem, and other "emo" bands. I mean real bands, I'd like to, so other than those bands you guys mentioned, do you know any good bands I should check out?

I know of Emotive Hardcore, I've not listened to any (except Jimmy Eat World, I like them).

I used to be obsessed with My Chem, but that was before I discovered KMFDM....

Bright Eyes are a great band, but they're indie, I'd say.

Someone once accused me of listening to emo because I had a Voltaire CD in...
I punched that person in the throat.

I haven't, but I'd like to hear what it was like before MCR et al came along and took a long, noisy piss over the concept of talent.

Indeed.
I'd recommend Sunny Day Real Estate... well, because I always recommend Sunny Day Real Estate. They are nice and accessible for people trying to take an interest in the emo scene, as well as being one of the most influential emo bands.

I love Voltaire! And cheers on the throat punchery. I never got into emo stuff.
