Anyways, I thought Faith No More did an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" song:

Some covers are okay. I like it if they keep the original feel or the song but doing something at least a little different to make it their own it's a hard balance. Right now I'm kinda pissed at the fact that HIM did a cover of Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper and I hate that cover so much. I can't listen to the original version the same anymore HIM totally ruined that song.

I honestly don't mind their cover. Yeah it's un-goth and cheesy and whatever, but it's not offensive to listen to or anything. It's just their finnish-mopey-whatever style pasted onto the song.

The original is still great.

Unto Ashes do an interesting cover of it too, Lydia Lunch did one too.

Also:
Guns & Roses - Sympathy for the Devil.

This post has encouraged me to join gothic.net. More than likely because I am a big time sucker for a rad cover tune. In my personal opinion, if a band can twist and reformat a song to make it fit their genre, fantastic. There are so many songs that I may love IF it were in a genre I enjoyed. So anyhow, down to the nitty gritty, here is my list of good covers! ENJOY!

A Perfect Circle - Freedom of Choice (Devo)
Dope - People are People (Depeche Mode)
? - Perfect Drug (NIN) Unsure who did this cover, but it is great. Here is a youtube link for it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpTygxvUbcc
Placebo - Running up that Hill
Marilyn Manson - Down in the Park (Tubeway Army [Gary Newman])
Gravity Kills - Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode)
Deftones - Simple Man (Lynard Skynard)
Bile - Scentless Apprentice (Nirvana)
Jack Off Jill - I Touch Myself (Divinyls)
Snake River Conspiracy - Love Song (The Cure)
Queen Adreena - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
Scarling - Creep (Radiohead)
Esoterica - Silence (Delerium w. Sarah McLachlan)
God Lives Underwater - Fame (David Bowie)
Kidney Thieves - Crazy (Willie Nelson)
Sister Machine Gun - Strange Days (The Doors)
Dishwalla - Policy of Truth (Depeche Mode) Not much difference from the original, but still a great cover.
Finger Eleven - Walking in my Shoes (Depeche Mode)
Machine Head - Message in a Bottle (The Police)
Type O' Negative - Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofts)
Ministry - Radar Love (Golden Earring)
Spiderbait - Black Betty (Leadbelly)
Spineshank - While my Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles)
Deadstar Assembly - Send me an Angel (Real Life)
Psycho Stick - Hokey Pokey (who the fuck knows)
The Cruxshadows - Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics)
Lard & Neuroticfish - They're Coming to Take me Away (Napoleon XIV)

And of course you have Me First and the Gimme Gimmes who have done fuck knows how many covers that are all relatively decent if you enjoy their style.

Okay I think I am done for now.

I'm not in a position where I'm forced to listen to a bad cover so a bad cover would never ruin a song for me. If I want to hear a song done the same way as the original then I'd rather listen to the original. I hate going to a bar and hearing a dreadful cover band attempt to hit all the same notes.

I posted previously the cover of "I Can See For Miles" by Theatre of Ice, completely different from the original, but very cool because of that. It actually captures a feeling of paranoia that the original failed to. Theatre of Ice also does a cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" that is more like the original and I don't think it works as well. They do go off to a different place toward the end of the song, with the strange serial killer poem and all the instruments falling away, and that part works.

I've fallen in deep romantic love with Fields of the Nephilim's cover of - In the Year 2525.

Not a bad choice!

Personally I'm liking Einsturzende Neubauten - Morning Dew. It's got the post-apocalyptic feel that none of the other versions do.

Bauhaus - Telegram Sam (orig. T-Rex)
One of the rare cases in which I actually prefer the cover version, not the original.

In Every Dream Home a Heartache (Roxy Music) is quite popular among goth artists. Rozz Williams, Fields of the Nephilim, Peter Murphy... Anyone else?

I'm rather a fan of some covers. My favorite being Graveworm's cover of Loosing My Religion.

Covers are like any other song, some are good, some are bad. Some outdo the originals, and some make you want to run the band over with a semi. I happen to like:

Mr. Bojangles by Sammy Davis Jr.
Feeling Good by Muse
Hurt by Johnny Cash
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix
Super Mario Bros theme by Ulu
The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana
Frontin' by Jamie Cullum
Gloomy Sunday by Billie holiday (if this can be considered a cover)

I think when you cover a song it's not supposed to be exactly the same as the original, especially if your a true artist and have actual talent and can stand out.

I'd say the same, but there are some exceptions. Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus is one : it's quite exactly similar to the original... But it works.
