Sorry to hear that you were depressed Bella.
It's good to hear that you're feeling better.

Thank you. These days, I'm starting to look at the brighter sides of things - rather, I'm trying to.

As have I, I've learned not to give a fuck about what anyone thinks about me. Here, or irl. In fact, I'm learning how to ignore certain people.

Goth is a freestyle way of thinking. It''s embracing your inner darkness and passion and being different to what society would say is normal. It's not being afraid to stand out from the crowd and follow your own beliefs and faiths even if you get harassed. It's more about being rebellious, strange, interesting for me

The way I see it is
Be what you want to be,
Do what you want to do,
Wear what you want to wear.
Don't take life so serious.
Don't give a shit what disapproving people has to say But accept that everyone has an opinion.

It's not different when you embrace arbitrary society norms of what's "dark"

How can someone be rebellious when he still feeds the evils of society?

You won't beat Jillian. He's rather clever, very good at arguing a point, and correct.

This is why goth is bloody lame. As Jillian stated, adhering to arbitrary normalities of being dark, does not make one so different. But you're totally right. It sure as fuck makes someone goth.

Yeah, I always kind of raised an eyebrow at that "embracing darkness" bit. To me, that translates to: "Alright, this is what society expects a Goth to be, I'll do it."

Say I found a completely boring goth who was absorbed in their own image?

A good book to read on the subject is "Goth Craft" by Raven Digitalis.
In the first few page sof the book, she explains what a Goth is and the different types of styles that you see in the Gothic culture (Sorry if I sounds like such a n00b. I've only been a Goth for a year!)

That book was an utter joke. They should string the author up on a nice, sturdy branch.

Say... I think there was a thread somewhere on the boards about that awhile ago, mocking it.

You know you're gothic when you're sitting in your living room, sipping a dry martini, puffing on a cocktail cigarette (the ones with the gold filters), listening to Tito Puente, wearing rhinestone and pink satin mules, a feather boa, cat's eye glasses and a chiffon gown (you, not Tito Puente), and pondering whether you've got enough gin to make it through the evening and whether to go olive or onion for the next round.

Well, at least she's right about the "Historic Goth" section.
I studied them for a while in 4th year at my school. They're quite interesting. Makes me wonder what the world would be like if they hadn't been kicked off the scene.

The thing is Goth dates all the way back to the Roman days and over the Centuries the meaning has sorta changed. The Goth look however seems to have just become just that, a look. As so many people have different ways of being Goth only sharing the common code of BLACK, you could almost simply say it's a look or dare I say it a style of dress.

It's a style of music that spawned a subculture with its own way of dress, customs, traditions, and beliefs. Honestly, the whole "being individual" thing is complete bullshit. The way we dress is nothing but a uniform.

goth is whatever you want it to be. i dont any one person has the right answer to this question, and im sure youd get a bajillion different answers from everyone. i tihnk it is a style you can call your own, even if its not the stereotypical dark look. you could wear anything, listen to anything, etc in my opinion, i tihnk goth really comes from the inside of a person? no, like i said beliefs will probably vary greatly
