What The Fuck Is This Shit?!

Okay, my youngest sister-in-law is doing one of those school fund-raisers. You know the kind... going door-to-door, selling cookies. And if you sell enough, you get a prize. Well, I'm looking at the prize sheet... the best thing is a $1,500 credit card! Following that is a 13-inch laptop. Then there's PS3s, XBOX 360s, and Wiis, one-year service plans for cell phones, surfboards and snowboard, iPods and PSPs, old XBOXs and PS2s, portable DVD players... the list goes on and on. When I was in school doing this crap, the best I could hope for was a pogo stick! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?! And no, a pogo stick in 1991 does not compare to $1,500 in 2007.

You know how things are today, what with all the electronics hyped and buzzed about. You see it on TV everyday! Back then, a kid was happy to receive a catching mit, baseball and a bat! But things have changed, and your average teenager's present under the Christmas tree has changed from a GI Joe action figure to an iPod.

Also, it's a good marketing scheme by those electronics manufacturers. They have more to gain from this by giving away a few free excess articles that would have ended up as over stock or unsold samples anyway.

No, I think Nevan has it right. These are sad times. Way back when, you could dupe kids into busting their asses selling cookies for a measly pogo stick. A Super Nintendo, at best. Now, you have to dangle $1500 in front of their noses just to get them to want to consider trying. It's sad. Sad as all hell.

How is it sad that the living standard is increasing?

I always hated those stupid fundraisers, I got the lowest prize every time because I was WAY too shy to go door to door....I'm still too shy to go door to door...

My son came in with one of those fundraiser thingies, and the top prizes were almost the same!! I also could not believe for a second that they expected a 1st grader to sell enough to win any of it.

...Then again, most of the time it's the parents doing the selling, taking the little catalog of stuff to be sold to the workplaces and selling for the kids. You very rarely see kids going door to door nowadays, unless its someone they know and can guilt the person into maybe buying something. Anyway, sad all around.

My brother just got one of those fundraisers, you have to sell over 1000 items before you get any of the good prizes.

*sigh* As a ward of the band AND choir departments at school, I'm subjected to multiple fundraisers.

But I can say with complete confidence that they help us a great deal. Fundraisers make trips possible and if we happen to need new uniforms, or some bit of equipment, it helps with that also.

I do agree that the prizes are complete tripe. If we're going to be selling things, our motivation needs to be the thing we're fundraising for. Not some piece of junk that winds up collecting dust in the back of the closet.

I think it's more sad if an idiot kid "busts his ass" for a pogo stick.

Welcome to reality. In this joint, fairness is at an all time low.
