I never really had a problem finding someone who is interested in me, I'm just picky and know exactly what I want in a partner so I was single for the majority of high school, CNU was a much larger dating pool and I quickly fell for Jake.

It computes for me. Of course, my thinking may be different because I have had several open relationships in the past. I have enjoyed a swapping party, have had two girls in bed at the same time and have even had 3 girlfriends at the same time at one point (who all knew about each other). The one thing that is true about those relationships is that they all lacked a certain amount of commitment, so while they were fun and loving relationships in their own way, they did not include the intimacy and bonding that my current monogamous relationship does. But I still am friends with all of those lovely ladies, so I can heartily endorse an open relationship to any person with enough emotional maturity to sustain it while being fair and supportive of your partners and not get hung up on ego.

In all seriousness, that closeness is exactly what I'm talking about, and is why open relationships are not something I have any interest in exploring. Part of what makes me feel close to my girlfriend is the feeling that we inhabit our own little world, complete with our own habits, language and the shit neither of us would ever share with others. A lot of this is sexual (I have various fetishes and I'm not misusing the word in saying so, so perhaps this can account for my lack of interest in sleeping around given that many girls are pretty likely to protest at being asked to do or accept certain things), but mostly, it's less about jealousy than the feeling that the presence of anyone else is surplus to requirements at best, and would simply be an annoying intrusion at worst. (Plus 90% of people who aren't my girlfriend annoy the living shit out of me.)
I'm not trying to imply that the only reason anyone EVER shares is because there's something lacking between them - only that personally, I see little appeal in the idea. However if people can out aside jealousy for long enough to experience something new, more power to them. Maybe one day I'll change my mind.

Open relationships are right for some people and not a viable option for other people. And then there are those people (and there are a lot of them) who can and do have open relationships but shouldn't do so because they are not able to be fair and supportive of their partners. They aren't in a healthy place mentally and typically view people of the opposite sex as things to be used and manipulated.
So when a person states that they have no interest in an open relationship, I heartily support that choice.
