I could pick any of a number of mainstays of the horror film genre, but for this thread I'll highlight The Phantom of the Opera (1989) starring Robert Englund in the title role. It isn't flawless, by far, but Englund gives an excellent performance that shows his depth as an actor outside of his usual role as Freddy. He displays a variety of emotions, ranging from psychopathic, sadistic killer to an almost childlike wonder. Also, the production values and musical score are quite good. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen this largely overlooked film.

Dunno why, but I've always loved "Captain Clegg". It's working title in the U.S. was "Night Creatures".

Inland Empire is the only movie in existence that has satisfactorily chilled me to the bone into paralyzed stupor.

Either Nomads or The Legend of Hell House, I can't decide.

The Devils, Rec, Twins of Evil, Eraserhead; not that many, really. I find Nightmare on Elm Street more interesting than I used to. Creep wasn't bad, cheap and slasher-esque as it was - ditto The Devil's Rejects. Good horror is very difficult to make.

House of 1000 corpses, probably. It isn't exactly "horror" per se, but a bit more gore, but I'm simply addicted to it.

I love and would recommend Jack Be Nimble, Santa Sangre and Suspiria.

Pumpkinhead is the scariest movie I've ever been.
I literally threw the tape away because I was so scared of it.
But I would say probably Signs because it's about ALIENS!
Any movie with ALIENS in it, I'm terrified of.
You can't make me watch it!

My top candidates are J-horror.

The Ring series, Audition, etc.

Oh, and Hellraiser.

A cross between Suspiria or 1987's Hellraiser.

For Sci-fi horror Aliens is my favorite, for just horror I would say the Halloween series up till number five and excluding number three.

Ha well I'm kind echoing the post above me but I have to say Alien, the original not the sequel.

But for an "actual" horror film I have to go with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

My favorite horror movie of all time would have to be "In the Mouth of Madness"

Suspiria would probably be my all-time favorite. I really hope a remake remains the stuff of unpleasent nightmares.
