Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Jesus fucking Christ, the Cure has a lot of them.
You should probably start with the one Steppenwolf suggested, Seventeen Seconds. The two succeeding albums, Faith and Pornography are really good too and round out the band's Goth phase.
The song "Lovesong" that Albert Mond suggested is on Disintegration, which is also a really good album.
Aside from those four albums, the only things that stick out of the Cure's catalogue in my mind are a handful of really good songs, but not albums as a whole.

I am inclined to agree with the three posters before me - Pornography is an amazingly good album.

It's my favorite album by them.
But then again, you could just download the songs, and if you need it in CD form for some reason, You could burn them onto a CD.

Get "Pornography". Or, on the other hand, just buy them all.

Pornography, if you're just getting into them and want doom and gloom.

Disintegration is a great album. I'd also suggest Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. Staring At the Sea and Galore are both collections of singles so they are sort of like "best of" CDs too.
We didn't already have a Cure thread? Just wondering. I'm too lazy to look. Looking around the music blogs will turn up some good bootleg live shows and outtakes too. I've been able to find several.

Disintegration is an easier starting point than Pornography, but either is great.
Faith is excellent as well.

Pornorgraphy. "The Figurehead" and "Cold" are worth securing on their own.

I liked their unplugged album. They sound good acoustic.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Any of the compilations are a good start, since it will give you a good range of the Cure's work.
If you are emotionally fragile or at a rocky stage in life, I would put off Disintegration until things stabilize. The Homesick / Untitled combination makes me want to just lay down in traffic.

Actually, there's a band out there called The Cold right now from Germany. Very Cure-like of course, but still pretty good.

Meh. I still say one should warm up with Seventeen Seconds and Faith instead of diving straight into Pornography.

she follows me down to the sound of the sea
slips to the sand and stares up at me
is this how it happens? is this how it feels?
is this how a star falls?
is this how a star falls?
the night turns as i try to explain
irresistible attraction and orbital plane
or maybe it's more like a moth to a flame
she brushes my face with her smile
forget about stars for a while
as she melts
meanwhile millions of miles away in space
the incoming comet brushes jupiter's face
and disappears away with barely a trace
was that it?
was that the jupiter show?
kinda wasn't quite what i'd hoped for you know
and pulling away she stands up slow
and round her the night turns
round her the night turns
round her the night turns
yeah that was it
that was the jupiter crash
drawn too close and gone in a flash
just a few bruises in the region of the splash
she left to the sound of the sea
she just drifted away from me
yeah, so much for gravity

No. Not all of them. You can definitely skip Wild Mood Swings.
