Always safe to hide behind the classics I suppose.
What would you say The Shining lacks to keep it from being perfect...

The 1980 theatrical release of "The Shining" is not a perfect horror film. I know because I really liked the Stephen King novel and I really like Stanley Kubrick's work. Well, all of it but this film and "Eyes Wide Shut", which I think is a film he had just given up on. This is not the perfect horror film because Kubrick bastardized the novel so much. And from the beginning, Shelly Duval seems so frail that a gust of wind might snap her like a twig. And Jack Nicholson starts sounding like he could kill his family by the 2nd frame. It's too over the top, an exaggeration. And Jack motors from 0 to crazy too fast to take it seriously.
I'd say Psycho, The Birds, Alien, The Exorcist and John Carpenter's The Thing (a personal favorite) are all better for starters.
When I heard Kubrick was going to make The Shining, I was so excited with anticipation. That may be why the letdown was so great. Stephen King was disappointed too.
So when he wrote the screenplay for the 1997 television miniseries, I got my hopes up again. It was better in some respects, but it should have been 4 hours long, not six. *sigh*
Anyway, welcome to this place. I look forward to your contributions.

Yes, I agree that the miniseries was much better. I actually watched it first by accident, then I knew there was a movie, and that`s how i discovered Stephen King.. Meh, childhood..
Better horror movies? I really like Frailty, The Cube (Psycho shit)...
Seriously, whoever said that The Crow is a good horror movie, go kill yourself.

The King novel isn't anything really that special to me. I don't judge the film based on my feelings for the book. Especially since my feelings and opinions of the book are lukewarm at best. It's a great film. It's an ok book. Judging a piece of art in one media based on what it's derived from in another media type is foolish.

I don't think I agree with any of this other than the Duval observation. She's supposed to be frail. That's the movie's character. It makes Jack that much more of a monster. Jack's descent into madness is what some people refer to as "boring." It's not though as they aren't intellegent enough to grasp the concept of overall atmosphere or true pacing.

It's not a pissing contest. These films being totally awesome doesn't detract from the perfection of The Shining.

Nobody cares what King thought. You shouldn't either. Big names agreeing with you doesn't make your thoughts more or less valid. It's merely coincidence.
