Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

I'm not quite sure which bands you already know and like, so I'm just doing a general summary of bands worth looking into if you haven't already... (I must warn you, I'm a sucker for rockabilly)
The Stray Cats, Subway to Sally (esp. the songs "Sag dem Teufel" and "Kleid aus Rosen"; pure genious), Nico (albums: "Chelsea Girl" and "The Marble Index"), Xmal Deutschland, David Bowie, Dead Can Dance, The Cramps, Devics, Lacrimosa (they've got a pretty kick- ass cover of the "Phantom of the Opera" song), Neon Zoo, Shadow Project, Bone Orchard, 1919, Rubella Ballet, Danse Society, Katzenjammer Kabarett, Little Boy Blues (might be hard to get, they only released one album as far as I know), Nightingales, early Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, The Kinks - alright, I'll stop here before I start rambling too much.
What about some classical music (dare I suggest it)? Impressionistic music a la Satie/ Debussy/ Ravel/ Tchaikovskij's "Pulcinella" is great to listen to, in my opinion, and you can find many great tunes in the operas and instrumental pieces of Mozart. Other noteworthy composers are Liszt, Purcell, Haydn and Bartôk.

Sixteens, Gorgonas, Mephisto Waltz, Sopor Aeturnus... but that's just a random assortment from the top of my head. I can't recommend much without knowing at least the general direction of your musical tastes.
... I'll also throw in Clan of Xymox and Voodoo Church.

I was thinking of recommending Psychlon 9. On that note, try to see if you can find anything by Din Fiv. Look into Artemis, Claire Voyant, And One, Stone 588, as well as 5,000 Fingers (If you can find their songs), Laibach (Although they're pretty well-known), Merzbow, and Black Snake Moan.

Yeah, that's been a real pain lately. I saw Sarabands going for $60 once. $60! They're great, and it may be worth it, but I'm hoping I really never, ever lose my copy. :-(
Current 93 is good fun too. I used to blast their CD "Faust" on Halloween, and pump my porch with as many fog machines as possible. I really miss having a porch, now that I think about it. :-)

16 Horsepower, Woven Hand, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Aesop Rock, Slim Cessna's Auto Club. That should broaden the fuck out of your collection.

I don't own the comp, so I'm not sure where they've dug up that song from, but now I think I might just have to get it.
SFT has a another hard to find song, "Simple Addictions," on the "American Gothic" LP (hard to find, but you can prolly get it with enough digging). "Simple Addictions" is from the "Strobelight Funeral" EP, although good luck finding that. A friend who met the band said that they're actually looking for copies themselves.

Oceania combine traditional Maori instruments and language with modern sound. Also, Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke is one of their vocalists.

I should also try to plug some local guys here:
Holy Cow (these guys toured with ASF way back when)
Thomas Nola et Son Orchestre (these guys worked with DIJ on a film soundtrack)
Also, if you can find it,
Blood and Roses (get the Love Under Will EP)
Seventh Seance (get the, The Incision EP)
