My childhood home is under threat of fire

http://www.independent.com/news/2008...t-fire-update/
I got a call about twenty minutes ago from my parents saying they had to evacuate the house due to wildfire. Its happened before, but this time the wildfire is literally half a mile away. It was so sudden, starting less than five hours ago, and there's been almost no preperation. There's a very real chance that my house could be burned down, especially since its so large and hard to fight. Fortunately I'm safe at university, but still, so much of my life was and is there.

Since my neighborhood is about a mile away from the really nice part of town I'm getting a bit of macbre amusement from the newcast zooming in from a distance on a huge mansion and saying "And that's XYZ's house, who produced these hit movies. Look at what a beautiful home that was".

I guess its really made think of how temporary is, how everything that you think is safe and guaranteed is just and fragile and ephemeral as anything. Everything will go away in the end. Forgive me if I sound like I'm trying to be poetic or something, it just really reminded me of everything I take for granted.

Are your parents ok? I heard on the news this morning that now the fire has consumed 100 homes.

Sorry to hear about your house.

I just got off the phone with my mom (my parents live in SB), the fire isn't anywhere near their house but she said she could see the fire in the distance and the air quality is awful.

Yikes! I hope your folks will be okay!! x_x;; Most possessions can be replaced; people can't.

My parents evacuated in time, but they couldn't get the cat into the carrier since she was hissing and biting, so they had to leave her. I'm really, really glad my parents are okay, but both my mother and I really love that cat.
As for possessions, I could replace everything that's not sentimental that I left at home without terrible expense. There, of course, are more than a few things that could never be replaced, but I guess nothing lasts forever.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cat. Felines are resourceful, and she'll probably find a way to hide one way or the other.

Isn't this supposed to be in whining?

Probably, but we should be a little more accommodating. Tralis seems very upset, understandably.

Perhaps it should be in whining, but this is a legitimate dangerous event that may affect other California residents. Not my house in specific, but the fire in general. I know some of the other memebers live in Southern California and may be under threat too.

Spooky News would probably best, but that's just splitting hairs.

Move it to spooky news if that's more apropriate. Perhaps a topic on the fires to be merged with this?

I do hope you're laughing at the second paragraph rather than the first...

Now that it is dark we can see from our second story windows the bands of fire on the Yorba Linda hillsides, a beautiful orange glow reflecting off the smoke drifting West-Southwest. We are safe...for now. It is thankfully blowing away from us. This is the second time this year that wildfires have come within a dozen miles of my home.

Your childhood home may be burnt to a crisp.

That's just hilarious.
