Record Industry: "Limewire Owe Up To $75 Trillion" – Judge: “Absurd”

Record Industry: "Limewire Owe Up To $75 Trillion" – Judge: “Absurd”

SOURCE

SOMEONE SHOULD SLAP THESE GREEDY S.O.B.'s - The record companies have collectively sued Limewire, estimating the damages owed them at $400 Billion on the low end, and at the high end — $75 trillion dollars.

That’s more than the GDP of THE ENTIRE WORLD!

The judge, in a refreshing stroke of good sense, deemed these potential damages “absurd” and the plaintiff’s approach “untenable”.

SHEESH!

Or maybe it's just that they've got some real balls, and when they come back with a revised suit of $50 billion it'll seem somehow reasonable in comparison.

I read that article. It would be funny if they weren't serious.

At the end of the day no matter what they come back with it will bankrupt the company and they will never get the full settlement.

Not if they don't want a bunch of nasty viruses on their computers, they don't.

They're not serious. They're lawyers.
As you say, Ben, they're just hoping that when they return with a lesser lawsuit still in the millions if not billions, the judge will rule in their favor due to the relative restraint of the new demand.

Doesn't that sound like it should be a line from a Monty Python sketch?

I posted this in another thread about the music industry here, but thought it was worth mentioning again.

100% of the money they 'recover' from lawsuits goes directly to the lawyers who bring the case. Not one cent goes to musicians. They feed off of lawsuits, which in turn bring in big bucks for the lawyers who use the money to finance more lawsuits.

The RIAA and MPAA are nothing more than large groups of lawyers, nothing else. They sue for large amounts of money to cover 'losses', yet none of the people they claim have been 'wronged' ever see any of the money.

It's a racket.

Oh, the whole industry is a hellacious racket. I remember the several attempts the movie industry has made to introduce the DIVX single play DVD, where you buy the DVD and then when you first play it the movie is only available for like 48 hours ... and then if you want to watch it again you have to pay more. It's all just naked, arrogant greed. It's also why things like Limewire got so popular in the first place.

That's why when I see bands like The Eagles distribute their CD directly through Walmart and Radiohead sell their album direct to consumers online, I want so much for those distribution models to succeed and thrive.

The thing is I download music mostly to see if I enjoy it. If I do enjoy and they are playing anywhere near me I will go and see them live.
