I am also confused... but, you need to understand something about actors. They just act, they follow a script or what the director tells them. It's like hating Will Smith for having a German Shepard in I Am Legend. It just sounds ridiculous.

Alfred Hitchcock made sure to appear in each and every one of his films, I doubt you'll find anyone calling him less of a director for it. Also if he kept having to get a new signature action every time his last one gets old, then it wouldn't really be much of a signature now would it?

I really like Robert Downey Jr. So what if he is reading the newspaper in all his movies? Would you rather him do something really stupid like pick his nose or something? Maybe that would be more interesting for you.
As long as he keeps doing an awesome Tommy Stark, he can do whatever he wants for all I care.
