Rudimentary Peni

As usual, I'm making a thread about a band I'm currently obsessed with. This time it's Rudimentary Peni. To me, they are a goth band in disguise as a hardcore punk band. They've made a nice blend of hardcore punk and a sliver of goth and deathrock. Rudi Peni's lyrics are based around and inspired by horror, gothic aesthetics, and alot of H.P. Lovecraft work (song names like "Hearse, "New England Tombstone Inscriptions", and "A Return to Victorian Values" says all). Singer Nick Blinko, along with writing gloomy and macabre lyrics, is an exelent artist who works with pen and ink to create ecentric and eerie drawings. Blinko was also institutionalized for having Schizoaffective Disorder and suffered delusions of being an entity called Pope Adrian XXXVII. The band wrote a concept album about these delusions. They're a band I'm getting to know and love. Favorite tracks thus far are "Media Person", "The Gardener", "Teenage Time Killer", and "Hearse".

Never heard of it. Where did you find the band?

I found out about them from the drummer in the punk band I used to be in. He liked them, but I didn't listen to them until recently in a friends car on his iPod. Then I bought an album.

Thanks for another revelation Haunted!

I found Post-Teenage Time Killers to be punk, but I still love them!

But I did think Rotten to the Core was Death Rock:

I listened to a bit of Rudimentary Peni quite some time ago, back when I was an angry (/angrier) teenager. Never got fully into them because the sound didn't appeal to me so much back then, but after re-listening - thanks to this thread - I feel its definitely time for a rediscovery. I can't believe I almost completely forgot about them!

And thanks for the links Humane, Rotten to the Core is an awesome song.

Goth band in a Hardcore disguise indeed Well said. I absoutley adore this band. I personally think they're much in-line with TSOL and even the Subhumans in my opinion, with the mixture of Deathrock and k0re punk at the same time. Can't forget Deep Church. 'Nothing but a Nightmare' and 'Flesh Crucifix' are my personal favourites by them.

Oh, Long Live Blinko

Since actual photos of the band and Blinko are a extremely rare, I'll put this here just so it's out there.

I hate to sound like a dick, but everytime I hear "hardcore punk", I cringe.

Oh well, I'll give it a listen to. I'm sure there's a couple of decent tunes here or there.

-Edit- I like the vocalist, but I dunno if it's someone I can really sink my teeth into.

Guess the same applies to me as well. I admittedly don't like the term 'Hardcore Punk' because it sounds generally too naraccistic or an excuse just to make aggressive music. I even like the term 'Anarcho Punk' better; because that at least, to an extent, shows there's more of an aesthetic then such.
Oh, but this band is a garunteed taste-satisfy. They're very lyrical, and sound a bit more raw than the Misfits. Anyway, I suggest giving their first EP the listen, if you can download it.

Yeah, I gave them a listen to. I'd really have to pick and choose the songs I'd listen to. I know this may come as a bit of a shock, but I don't really like The Misfits so much.

My reaction isn't so complex when I hear the word "hardcore punk". When I hear "hardcore" anything, I get images of Linkin Park and KoRn. And well, when I was in High School, "punk" was not the punk that's better to be known and stayed the way it was. Punk, in my area of the world, was Blink 182.

And I hate that damn word. Hardcore. People throw that word on anything to sell shit to emos.

Oh, it's all cool. Both bands are an aquired taste, honestly. I think Misfits and Samhain are the only horrorpunk bands I can do, really. Glenn's kinda a charecter I can't leave alone.

Glenn surprised me with his rail thin stick figure body when The Misfits started out. I was told he beefed up because his old guitarist beat his ass in a fist fight, so he fired him and 'roided up. LoL!

Glenn's early work in Misfits sounds even doo-wop influenced. And his voice was less harsh than it is today.

Oh dear, off topic.

Definitely not your run-of-the-mill boring hard-core punk. They are true originals. They fit very nicely into the death rock scene.

For those who are into them, but don't have much of thier stuff I recomend starting with the "Death Church" album. It shows thier all around goodness without throwing in any suprises that might throw people off.

So I recenty got the H.P. Lovecraft themed RP album 'Cacophony'. It's very good. Some of the songs could be longer and done with less filler, but other than that I love it. It's their most deathrock-y album and I recomend it.
