I agree that drugs should be legalized, regulated, and taxed by the U.S. government, but that wouldn't decrease violence in the S. American nations where drugs are produced. Not unless Americans began producing the plants from which drugs are distilled themselves, or the U.S. literally sent soldiers into drug-producing nations to solidify one cartel's regime over all the others. Or hand the farms over to a U.S. corporation. United Fruit could become United Cocaine!

I'm no horticulturist, but I don't think the U.S. has the proper climatic zones to effectively grow the plants. As for the second option, it just creates all new violence.
