would you tell me about your gothic writing...?

[quote=MollyMac]It's not ironic as most of the conversation on this site is bent torwards defining Goth and defining what is goth. It's beating the spooky, undead horse.

*thwack*

I suppose so. After all, isn't that what all people on a site like this are trying to do; to wonder, not only what Goth is as a culture, but if they identify with the culture? You call it "beating the spooky, undead horse"; I call it hitting the nail on the head.

I put no....

I love gothic literature, movies, art, clothing and design elements. But I don't want to BE any one thing all the time. I have days when I don't look or seem goth at all.

Plus, I'm deaf so I don't listen to goth music -- I prefer stuff I can sing along to (badly) so filk is more my thing -- and I don't go to goth clubs. Deaf people have a social scene all their own and that's twisted enough for me. You have to understand that we all grow up together, go to the same schools, date the same people....the relationships end up being very close, kind of incestuous, really, and sometimes quite dark as well.

Sure. I'm working on a story that is kind of my take on a Vampire story only there are no traditional vampires, just vampire story themes. When I'm actually writing it and not being completely lazy, I enjoy it so much it could be considered sinful. I've been lacking motivation for a while though.

Anyways, I wanted to ask this question...I'm new so I don't really know where it is appropriate to ask technical questions, but here I go a-asking.

I see that a lot of people post poetry on the literature board, can stories be posted there too? Not like 70 page novellas or anything, but I was thinking like 3 paragraph chunks of a story at a time (in the same thread, of course).

sorry if that was OT.

Yes, people post short stories in the literature thread all the time. I'm slowly working on some to contribute. My writing is more socio-political than Goth, but it seems to be o.k. here. I look forward to reading your stories.

I don't often think of myself that way, though if I honestly consider it I'd have to say yes. I'm just terribly disconnected from everyone else...

"The more you deny your gothness the more gothy you are"- I forget who said that but its how people around me work. Its annoying. But I don't follow that rule. I am goth.

I know what you mean. I do not think admiting it makes you less goth, it just means you have enough fucking balls to say it.

I do call myself a goth, because I'm in love with goth music. I feel, I KNOW that goth is a musical genre and nothing else. The "dark mindset" usually comes with the territory, but it's just icing on the cake.

I'm also really adamant and defensive about goth. Call me an angry fanboy. If you said Bauhaus released "Bela Lugosi's Dead" in 1980, I'd probably kick your ass for your inaccuracy.

May I have the horse's skull when you are done with it? And no, I am not goth.

I identify myself as gothic. If there's one thing I learned in high school before graduating, is that identifying with a sub-culture and accepting it's stereotypes (not emulating those stereotypes, just accepting that they exist), laughing at the jokes people make about you (which catches them off guard and then makes them interested in learning more about who you are instead of what you are), and daring to do what others will not, is that people will respect you. It's weird, but I was one of the most respected and influential persons at my school. Which shocked me.

It reminds me of something my 5th grade teacher posed to us. "Who are you?" We all answered with our names and stuff like that. I knew what I was and I knew my name, but I didn't grasp that those things were not who I am. "Gothic" is not who I am as it's too broad, but it's good step in learning who I am.

What if the sentence is "AFI is not gothic"? Still gonna kick my ass? :C

I don't think I am a goth, but I could be confused with one. Many things goth make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Well, Goth would be the only sub-culture I would fit in to.
Though, I am an individual and there are many things about me that aren't goth as well. I don't think there is nearley anyone who fits in to an exact stereo-type....
I don't like really use labels anyway- I am who I am- but if you were to place me anywhere, it would be here.

I call myself goth only so far as it helps me educate people. I won't go around saying I'm goth, but if I see teenagers talking about how goth Korn is, I will intervene and educate them. Self-identification helps with that. I actually find myself educating adults way too often. A 26-year-old tried to tell me once that goth had its peak in the 90s. I had to step in.

The thing I will never do is call myself a goth and nothing else. I prefer calling myself a fan of gothic things, because that allows me to be other things as well.

And besides, my friends call me a goth enough as is.

Arrrgh! Technicality! I wouldn't kick your ass then.

Have you all noticed that it's very easy to tell the difference between a real goth and a baby bat?
