Also, here's some food for thought.
Vegans can't swallow...
....where's the fun in that?

Well, but that's a consensual thing. Like the cow in family guy that enjoys being branded and milked.

Absolutely, and do it laughing. I would kill and eat a person if people had any nutritional value.

Well then, this changes everything! Bust out the BBQ sauce! No seriously, I mean, I havn't looked into it for myself, but I had been told by others (idiots) there isn't. I mean aside from fat and protein. Unless on a very strict diet, I couldn't imagine the average (American) person being too good for you. What benefits are there??

Yes, I would.
In fact, I would prefer that I be the one to kill the animal, because then I can kill only what I need.

In the sense you'd leave the carcass or make use of all the elements of the carcass?

Hmmm, I wasn't thinking of the carcass when I wrote that (I was thinking of fish, which really doesn't leave a carcass). However, now that you mention it, I probably could use most of the carcass of a larger animal for something.

I was just wondering. It would be a waste to just steal a piece and leave the rest to rot. We've got freezers now, it's still good!

Whether we are carnivore, vegan, or something in between, no matter how carefully we choose our food, somewhere back along the long chain of food production and preparation, killing took place. No matter how carefully we trod, with every step countless insects, mites, and other creatures inadvertently perish under our feet. This is just the nature of our world. It is only when we escape altogether from the round of birth and death, when we enter into the final liberation of nirvana, the Deathless, can we wash our hearts clean, once and for all, of killing and death. To steer us towards that lofty goal, the Buddha gave us very realistic advice: he didn't ask us to become vegetarian; he asked us to observe the precepts. For many of us, this is challenge enough. This is where we begin.
|
The first precept is "Do not kill or cause to kill any being." Not just human, any being that we can reasonably prevent the death of is worth saving. We are all caught up in Indra's net and reflected in each other, why kill our animal brothers, when it is so needless to do so? We cannot go through this life without causing any suffering, but that is no excuse to not want to cause as little suffering as possible. Remember, the vow of a bodhisattva is to be reborn again and again until the last blade of grass is enlightened. Respect for fellow beings and the world we share is essential, as is compassion and love for all things for such a vow to be sincere. How can you say you love all animals when you support a business that enslaves them and kills them, seperates mothers from daughters and sons, causing stress and insanity? How can you as a consumer vote with your dollars and say its okay to waste so many resources and chop down the rainforests so you can enjoy a hamburger?

Yes I can ^_^ I'm not enslaving or taking advantage of a man when I do so, it is freely given with informed consent. Same with breast milk.

Dairy cows endure great amounts of pain if not milked regularly so milking them is not enslavement. On most smaller farms cows and even goats quite willingly come to the farmer to be milked, they don't have to be chased down or even forcefully held in place. If the cow comes of its own free will to the farmer and has an opportunity to walk away at any time then could you have the milk since the animal is freely willing to be milked?

It is actually a bit on the sweet side, like cream only with the consistency of skim milk.

I'm told its not bad. I can't remember if it was my mom or my aunt who enjoyed the taste of their breast milk. Weirded me out when I was a kid, strange how that is considered weird and sometimes gross and yet cow milk, with all its pus and vaginal juices is not considered gross or abnormal.

Well I do enjoy *a little* exploitation now and then ;]

We've bred them to have such large udders and we took away its babies, a cow is extremely maternal, doing so causes her a lot of emotional pain, and if we let her keep her babies instead of turning them into veal, she'd be nursing and wouldn't need to be milked by humans.

I'd probably only kill an animal if it was a choice between that and starving. I would rather eat vegetables.
