Arguments I've heard against gay marriage and adoption: (Snarky comments are all mine)

1) It will destroy the sanctity of marriage!

You're right. Heaven forbid we allow people who've been in a comitted relationship for 20+ years be allowed to legalize it, and have it recognized as a marriage, thus lowering the stats of the percentage of couples who routinely commit adultery, and making it seem like cheating on your spouse is no longer "normal".

2) Homosexuality is a "choice"!

Is it, now? And just when did you "choose" to be straight?

3) Homosexuality is a perversion!

But having anal or oral sex between two people of the opposite gender isn't? (well, it's not, in any case, but you get my drift)

4) Homosexuality is an aberration!

Incorrect. Same-sex copluation is common in the animal kingdom as well. And most often becomes more prevailent when the "community" is stressed (ie; lack of resources like space, food, water, etc). Chew on that one for awhile.

5) If we let homosexuals adopt then there won't be any kids left for "normal" people to adopt!

(This most often comes from the rabid "Right to Life"-ers, who, incidently, are not adopting kids, either). Gee, what a concept! Children leaving foster care, and the clutches of the State, in order to live in a warm, loving environment! More places for unwanted children to go, thus reducing the -need- for abortions. Why, whatever will we do with the government lackeys who write those checks for the foster care system every month, or the poor, out-of-"work" zealots who now have to find something to do with their time, besides wasting it protesting abortion clinics. The entire US economy might just collapse! *insert heavy eye rolling here*

6) There will be more molested kids, if homosexuals are allowed to adopt!

FACT: Most child molesters are straight.

7) If Homosexuals are allowed to marry, you're going to see more and more of them having sex in the streets!

Highly unlikely. If they didn't have any desire to have sex in public before, why should allowing them to marry be any different? Besides, how many "straight" couples get busted on a regular basis for public sex?

8) If we allow Homosexuals to marry, that will just open the door to other perversions, like polygamy, besiality, incest, and NAMBLA. What's to stop us from letting Joe Blow down the street marry his favorite sheep?

(This is my favorite argument, because of the stupidity of it, btw).

First, for bestiality, and "marrying" underage children...

Allowing Homosexuals to marry involves an agreement between -consenting- adults. Your favorite sheep cannot give informed consent, now can she? And children cannot give said consent, either. Allowing "marriage" in these cases, is an excersize in victimization (and let's not even get into the discussion of what qualifies as a "legal" adult here in the US).

As for polygamy? Well, if you can keep it together, pay your bills, and not be a burden on society, why not? As long as all people involved are legal adults capable of informed consent, who is it going to hurt?

For incest? This is a grey area, but scientific findings are showing that familial relations producing offspring don't necessarily produce dimwits (which was the whole reasoning behind making brother-sister, father-daughter, etc; marriages taboo). Personally, the whole idea makes me squicky, but then, if it's not an exploitative relationship, who am I to judge? I don't have a habit of peeking in people's bedroom windows.

IMO? We need to get the government out of our homes. If what you're doing is a "victimless" activity, then it's no one's business but your own.

I'm pretty sure gay marriage would DECREASE the spread, as homosexuals would be in legally binding committed relationships facilitated by the government, forcing them to take themselves more seriously and theoretically decrease casual sex! I actually don't see this as making a difference in the spread of AIDS, to be honest. If you're prone to be monogamous, you'll be monogamous, whether you're allowed to marry, or not. And if you're prone to be promiscuous, you'll still screw anything that moves, no matter what vows you've taken.

When I tried to argue that point, someone pointed out that the gay people might cheat...
