Burning Man claims copyright on your photos

wow, talk about ironic; a celebration of creativity and stickin' it to the man, a celebration of doing your own thing, following your own path, creating your vision of the world, and sharing that celebration and creativity.... unless you post something we don't like, even though you paid up to $350 for your ticket to be here...

link to Snatching rights on the Playa , from the EFF

P.S. this is in politics because it does have to do with rights of the individual, albeit in a temporary community of a week rather than a "formal" civic situation. It didn't seem to fit anywhere else.

You have certain rights under law. They can't just be stripped away (unless the US system is much more aggressive and proprietary than the UK).

There's also been trouble from people selling on photos they took at Burning Man, which didn't have consent of the people pictured- imagine going into your *highly* respectable job one day to find that some joker's sold his pictures of BM to a local source, and your colleagues are now looking at you dancing nude but for some body paint?

I'm not defending their actions, and I don't think that people should be able to restrict what you do with your camera on your holiday in this way, but there are usually reasons behind actions like this. Glad I didn't intend to bring a camera, and I'll ask a few regular burners that I know outside of the internet if they know of or have experienced this.

(on a minor note, I wouldn't call it a festival of stickin it to the man... there's some of that, yes, but the term suggests a whiny teenage wanna-be-johnny-rotten attitude that I've never found in any burners I know)

perhaps my choice of phrasing wasn't the best... it is just that I don't like the idea of an entity dedicated to creative expression being that restrictive. if you create an image, you have right to that image. I can understand the picture at work scenario, and how it could cause issues, but there has to be a better way to deal with the situation than this.

I would agree with that more if they painted it, or carved it. In todays world any regular jack-off can buy a camera and go to a nude beach (if they had one) and claim that it's part of their art, and they had no right to take away their pictures. What about if a pedophile was taking pictures of children at a park? You'd take away their camera before you could wipe the sleep from your eyes.
It's always better to get permission, or if you don't, never let those photos see the light of day.

Well if you waive such rights(which is required in order to enter), then they are free to take them away, as long as they dont break any laws. They did this because on 5 occasions burner pics were found on pornographic websites. Fortunately they managed to get them down, but next time they may not be so lucky.
