Re: spirit guide

Is it possible to have a Human spirit guide? Because that's what I believe I have.

Why not?

If I was a spirit guide, I'd be what ever the hell I felt like being.

I sure wish emeraldlonewoulf would come back to this thread. He birthed it and abandoned it like a prom-night dumpster baby. *and so starts the dumpster baby song-and-dance number from family Guy*

But hey, I'm only running with what I've read here. I never thought Furries took their stuff as far as religion until it was mentioned, and that's where I decided I stopped liking it.
Yes, a single person cannot have a TOTEM spirit, but they can have a spirit guide. Everyone has a spirit guide, most simply do not take the time to identify them.

You are correct, however. I did misunderstand your post. I apologize for my overreaction.

Hi.. all of the posts in this board are so very long and my eyes hurt far too much to read all of them, but, anyway..
I am also a furry. Nothing interesting, but I see myself as part domestic siberian husky, part wolf. I think it fits me well..
It's interesting to see that there are other furries hanging around these boards..

I apologize for the "thread abandonment". Just a note, but I am a she, not a he. No offense taken, however. I have to go to work right now, (first day on a new job, yay!) but I will post more tonight. I must say that frankly i am amazed at the response this thread has received already. Talk more later. Toodles!

Wow, this thread is very interesting! Just like Honeythorn, I remember that CSI episode and I never knew that it was a real subculture.

How does one find their spirt guide? How do you identify with it?

In Soviet Russia, spirit guide finds YOU!!!!!!
But yeah, it finds you, usually. And as for identifying, you just...do. You'll know it when you have it, trust me.

Finding your spirit guide is often done through meditation or guided meditation. during which you ask for your guide to show itself to you. You can have many guides throughout your life, and more than one at a time. They come in many forms.

To the CSI watchers: PLEASE don't base you whole idea of Furry on that episode, or the MTV special either. Doing that is akin to basing a perception of Goth from The Craft or The Crow. Yes, that skewed.

The Spiritual aspect is there for many, that is true. But it isn't all of it. For some it is just they are more comfortable with animal-like characteristics, or behaviors. For others there is a definite kinky element. Personally that side I don't find particularly interesting. I like the artwork, And I have found the community to be very kind and friendly.
Some people spend years developing their persona, and thousands of dollars in putting together an original fursuit. Some are professional mascots, and a few older ones have just grown with the animation industry, so their interest stems from that. Most are just individual enthusiasts, and the greater majority don't do the whole fursuit thing. I think it could be cool, but the suits are not that comfortable, not to mention extremely hot. You have to modify your body language in order to communicate, and seeing through the head can be difficult. (It is against "the code" to speak while in fursuit, especially as a mascot or something, I mean, think how scared kids would get if Mickey Mouse sounded like somebody else, only through a doubled up quilt) It is also against code to take your head off in public, for the same reasons.

There are many comic book aficianados in the fandom, as well as those who collect disney and other animation, in addition to more traditional art, and creators of all the above. There is also a large contingent of people into computer related fields, web design, programmers, etc.

That is all I can think of for now. It is really cool to see how many people have responded.

P.S. Should we start an 'animal totem, spirit guide, native spirituality' thread somewhere? I'm not the one to do it, as I don't really know much about it, but I think it would be cool.

Lykaios stated quite clearly that only groups of people can have totem spirits. Like native American tribes...

Hopefully you see where this is going... I am doing more than being impudent. If you're going to take a shit on other people's spiritual inclinations, you better be ready to back yourself up.

While Cyntrox used the example of Native American tribes, totems can also be entities (spirits, ghosts, or whatever) that watch over families.

I suppose the best way to describe it is to say that totems watch over a family, and stay with that family through-out the generations, whereas a spirit guide will attach itself to a single person, and only that person. (That's not to say that the spirit guide won't attach to someone else some time down the road, just that spirit guides aren't familial, while totems are.)

I studied the subject at hand.

Though I will admit that I may be wrong. I haven't spent huge amounts of time studying this.

I have just done some preliminary reading on the topic, and it looks like the comments of the previous posters are indeed in accordance with the traditional definition.

On the other hand, if there is any field in which definitions shift easily, it is religion. If the new agers, who are not small in number, have been using the term this way for a while now, why not simply say that they are using it in a new, unconventional sense? Why do they have to be "wrong"?

It's no different with many other terms. Two people can call themselves "socialists" or "Christians" or whatever you want, and mean very different things.

In all honesty, I don't see how spirituality (of which totems and spirit guides are certainly a part of) and religion match up. Sure, spirituality may help define religion, and vice versa, but they aren't neccessarily the same thing. Or even part of the same thing. I'm a spiritualistic person, but I have no faith in any particular religion.

In other words, it seems to me that many people these days try to make two seperate things into one, and it just doesn't work.

Rather, the use of religion creates someone to gain spirituality. Not forcing two into one. LIke the grass needs the sun.
