Am I nut or what?
I just got scheduled to attend a surfing camp in July.
The thing is.... I've been to beach less 10 time in my whole life and actually swam in beach with wave only twice, both for less a hour.
So... am I crazy for ever considering this? I can't drop out of it now lol.

Well, I am going to assume that you will be with an instructor who will be able to help you if there are problems. But, you know how to swim, right?
It think it should be cool.

If you know how to swim, go for it. Trying new stuff doesn't hurt and you might like it.

It does hurt when it's surfing and you get dumped.
Ha. Good luck.

Be sure to wear a rash guard! If you don't, hitting the sand when you wipe out WILL tear your skin off! You will be covered in scabs! So yeah, the rash guard is your friend.
But yeah, trying new things is good.

I pray you don't know that from personal experience.

I used to surf a lot. It's a blast. A rash guard, though, is intended more to protect against rashes from your wetsuit rather than sand. It's still a good idea, though.

Thanks for advice HP.
Twink, is it suicidal to just jump on surf without being really use to beach first?

Only if it's really huge surf. Otherwise you should be fine as long as you're a good swimmer.
Two other things to keep in mind:
1) You'll spend a lot of time paddling against the currents, so surfing will give your arms a good workout.
2) It helps to have a good sense of balance.
I noticed you're in Chico. Home for me is in Pacifica, on the coast just south of San Francisco. Where do you plan on going surfing?

I'll be at surfing camp so I'm assuming it should be safe.
I use to skateboard and wakeboard, so I'm really hoping those experience help.
Last time I went to beach with friends, we went to Huntington Beach. We would go and wade against the current until we are chest or neck deep in water then wait for wave to hit us and push us to shore. That was fun! But it was scary at first because when wave hit me, I end up got thrown onto sand and spin all over the place. So that's why I was kinda concerned about this. But I really want to try, so... I decide to do it.
I'll be going to a surfing camp in San Clement with my coach's son. But if I like surfing and I'm up for it, we can try get together and surf sometime.

Skateboarding and wakeboarding will definitely work to your advantage. Let me know how you do and if you enjoy it. Maybe we can get together sometime.
