What band do you think deserves more recognition?

To make it more interesting the band doesn't have to be 'goth'. What band do you think deserves more recognition for the contribution that they made to music, or their music kicked(or kicks) ass and they deserve to be more widely known?

I would have to say Public Image Limited(PiL). They were formed by John (Rotten) Lydon right after The Sex Pistols broke up and were one of the most important post punk bands to come out of England. They were around until 1993 and put out a ton of material. They were important because they were really original, and didn't sound like anybody else, plus they have influenced countless bands. Not only that, but their sound progressed and changed through the years, so that they weren't playing the same kind of songs the entire time. I saw them once in 87,when they opened for INXS(HA!) and twice in 89(I think) and they put on a fantastic show. You just had to be careful of the flying spit that would hit the stage.

My favorite three albums by them are:

1. First Issue. Johnny wrote many of the songs for this album while he was in The Sex Pistols, so this album is quite punky. Religion, Public Image, and Annalisa are classics.

2. This Is What You Want....This Is What You Get. This album has some really heavy bass lines and includes a really cool instrumental called The Order Of Death which was featured in the movie Hardware. Other great songs are This Is Not A Love Song and Bad Life.

3.Album. This was the first album by theirs that I ever got and is my favorite. Steve Vai plays guitar and Ginger Baker, from Cream, plays drums. This is a very heavy album that includes the classic Rise and other great songs such as Home,FFF,Fishing and Bags.

Basically their earlier albums are more experimental while their later ones are more pop oriented.Other albums by them(in no particular order):

Second Issue AKA Metal Box
9
Happy?
Paris Au Printemps
Flowers Of Romance
Live In Tokyo
That What Is Not
The Greatest Hits So Far
Commercial Zone

I really like Common Rider. They're not together anymore but I heard them on a Hopelessly Devoted to You cd, and they're great. The singer was Jesse Michaels, formerly of Op Ivy. They have ska/punk sound. My favorite song by them is Small Pebble. Not really too serious/political lyrics but the sound is what you'd want to listen to while drinking beers with friends on a summer day while grilling out.

A good industrial band I love is Kidney Thieves. I don't like Industrial all that much, but they're a very original band. They covered 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline, whom I also love. How many Industrial bands would do that?

Horror G - I'd heard of Johnny Rotten because of the Sex Pistols but thus far in my punk edumacation, I haven't listened to PiL yet. Your taste is great though, so I'll tag that next on the Amazon list...

Try any one of those three albums that I described because they are all good starting off points.

I think Rasputina needs more attention. I would shrivel up in die if they ever broke up. I have a physical NEED for their music.

Someone may kick me for this, but poo if it happens. I'm going to speak my mind. I think that power metal band DragonForce deserves recognition, especially in the states. They blend headcrushing speed with choir-like vocals and fantasy lyrics to make one hell of a performance. I have both of their albums, "Valley of the Damned" and "Sonic Firestorm" and each track on each album is pure gold. Check them out if you like anything like Nightwish, Iron Maiden, Sonata Arctica and such.

Tee, me likes their 'Transylvanian Concubine' song. That chick’s voice is prettier than Robin Guthrie’s.

I love Rasputina! I played the cello officially (in school orchestra) for six years, and I still pick it up every now and then, but I suck at it so much now that I avoid it.

Well, back when I listened to metal, I was under the impression that Flaw deserved a lot more recognition. Although I think nowadays they are getting it with the release of their second album. They are slowly becoming a famous band, and I'm happy about that, because I really loved their music. I still love it to an extent nowadays.

Cool Evanescence

The lead singer writes their songs from her heart. Anyone who has heard "Hello" (Track 9 on their album, Fallen) will know how sad these songs can make you feel ---> Hello is sad because it was written for Amy's sister, Connie, who sadly died when Amy was 6.
However, anyone I've ever asked about Evanescence see them as just another Goth band. To me they are so much more.

I don't know how much recognition they get in Europe, but here in the States "And Also The Trees" deserves a hellofalot more. I'd also say, "Sopor Aeternus," just because of the freak-show factor, but really he doesn't deserve any more attention. :P

I always felt that 16Volt deserved more recognition - even some radio play. I'd say they are my favorite band above all others. I even had the privilage of getting my nose busted at one of their shows by an accidental moshpit headbutt - good times

J.G. Thirwell is another guy that deserves more attention (Foetus). I'm not even sure if he's still making music cause I'm so out of touch.

As far as Evanessence goes, the two original members met in church camp.

I've been a fan of Rasputina for just shy of 7 years.. and Kidney Thieves, I've loved since their debut album, plus I would like to add Sirrah tothe list. Their genious lasted only two albums, but every track is pure musical ambrosia.

Celtic Frost

Celtic Frost have been one of these bands that have always been musically ahead of their time.

They were always trying to push their music in new and interesting directions by not being afraid to experiment, this is something that ultimately made them a unique and very influential force in metal, for many years to come.

Reccomended listening:

To Mega Therion (1986, Noise Records)

Into the Pandemonium (1987, Noise Records)
