Good metal?

To be perfectly honest, I don't know what good metal is. I'm not really a fan of metal, and for the brief time I was I just listened to deathklok, opeth and a few christian metal bands that my friends told me about.

The whole thing about Sanguine not being a metalhead has made me wonder what "good" metal is. So if people could post a few links to this elusive metal that only real metalheads listen to, I would be grateful. I doubt I'll like it, but I'm intrigued.

There's one sole metal band in my playlist: His Hero Is Gone. Then again, what I like is their lyrics.
I know jackshit about metal; I hate most of it. But you might want to try them.

What style do you like? If you like Opeth I'd recommend Ihsahn or Neurosis. They're more heady and complex then most metal bands and they are 'good' because they are talented and original in their delivery.

Sanguine's a Metalhead, I think. He's just overly-proud of it, I think, and so people joke about it.
Anyway, in my mind, good metal would be:
Grand Funk Railroad
Black Sabbath
Blue Oyster Cult
Led Zeppelin
Uriah Heep

Probably because HIM covered them, and HIM is all Neo-Goth or something.

...Although I think this song sounds a bit proto-Goth.

Black Sabbath are the only Metal band on Mond's list. I'm working on a massive compendium of Metal for you since I'm at home, sick, so expect a fuckload of band recommendations in the near or not-so-near future.

JCC is right stolide. 70's hard rock isn't considered metal anymore.

Sanguine Mind isn't metal either. I suggest you screen these guys's threads. You'll find them to be immature morons that only listen to 80's butt metal. They have no appreciation for music and most likely get their metal albums from their parents.

If you want to listen to some more modern stuff I'd recommend:

Strapping Young Lad
Soilwork
Enslaved
Amon Amarth
Behemoth

These bands are actually HEAVY, as well as being incredibly talented and technical. They also formed within the last ten or twenty years as apposed to drying up long ago.

Nope. It's that you turn them into Hard Rock and Prog. Conventional knowledge says that BOC, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Uriah Heep are all Metal.

The wiki engine relates heavy metal to prog-rock and hard rock because the two genres LED TO metal. They aren't really metal though.

Albert is just trying to inject his taste in music into the conversation and derail the thread like he always does. I suggest you click his snail bob link and discover how metal he REALLY is.

Sounds like hard rock with blues elements. Like I said before. Elements of metal, but not metal.

You're saying BOC is some kind of metal band that only plays metal sometimes. Hmmm. Not quite the band I'd recommend to someone who is asking about metal.

H.I.M is "Love Metal"

Which boils down to nothing to do with goth, or metal.

Neo-Goth is a bullshit genre made up by wannabe gothic romantics that listen to Cradle Of Filth and The Cruxshadows.
Not that I dislike Cradle Of Filth or The Cruxshadows.

Hard rock/Prog-Rock =/= Metal

If you want decent metal try Behemoth, Sepultura, My Dying Bride, Machine Head, and Five Finger Death Punch.

What the Hell is "Love Metal"? Isn't that an album?

Perfectly right. Metal is Metal. A metal band can play prog and hard rock and still play. The fact that a band has more than one song doesn't make them somehow incapable of being Metal. This would also make Sabbath a non-metal band.

Quite right. Should have listed them.
But apparently AC/DC never did metal because they also had some Hard Rock songs, and that somehow renders all their metal work irrelevant.

Black Sabbath are not metal because they formed before metal was established. They are also a Hard Rock Band.

As for your bit about a band playing prog rock and hard rock and metal. I know some electro bands that sometime make a metal song or two. Like Nine Inch Nails. Those couple Metal songs do not make them a metal band any more than BOC, Deep Purple or Iron Butterfly.

A metal band plays metal.

I'm pretty sure duane was joking with you.

And you're right. AC/DC is not a metal band. They are Hard Rock. None of their work is irrelevant OR metal because they are hard rock.

This discussion is over. You and sanguine continue listening to prog rock and hard rock. There's nothing wrong with that. Really wish you'd stop calling it metal though. What exactly are you trying to prove? That you're too cool for hard rock and prog? Grow up.

Figures. I'd like to see some concrete proof that their stuff isn't Metal. You know... like with comparisons to "actual" metal bands.

Neo-Goth doesn't exist.

I'll agree with EtS here.
They formed before metal was a genre.

What? Albert now you're just being stupid, I have to agree with JCC, the only metal band you listed would be Black Sabbath. Led Zeppelin Metal? You must be on something.

Some Metal bands I like:

Apocalyptica
Obituary
Kataklysm
Black Candle
Abstract Rapture
Dark Tranquility
Amorphis
Samael
Crematory
Bathory
Hypocrisy
Motörhead
Equilibrium
Subway to Sally
Opeth
Korpiklaani
Unleashed

Edit: HIM isn't Love Metal or Neo-Goth, it's pop with tediously repetetive guitar riffs.
