Because people are stupid.
Goth and emo came from punk, anyways, so technically they're subcultures of punk.
Try to use your shift key.
...Man, am I blunt.

I know they're subcultures, but really, how easy is it to completely mistake punk, emo and gothic ******? It's not exactly hard is it? how many Emos do you know who walk around with parasoles and edwardian style dresses, with platform boots and wings?
Really, No.
There. I even used the shift key for you :P

Well, the thing is that the EGL fashion is rather rare compared to other gothic fashions.
Also, the media has bastardized them all into one thing.

And as the common folk have all information directly fed into their brains from the media, we'll be called emo until the next ungodly phase is spawned.
Welcome.

Eh, you're not the only one mistakenly called emo. How many emos do you know wear combat boots, a mohawk, eyeliner, various ankhs and fishnets? None, I tell you! Welcome to Gnet.
And I like how you chose to die while having sex. It's a bit tasteless, and flavorful at the same time (yes, tasteless and flavorful), but funny anyway.
