Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

Hairfall advice from the pros..
Well it seems to be an odd calling of sorts and I don't quite get why, but people in my town are starting to wonder what the hell cyberfalls are and steampunk falls, along with hairfalls in general.
Not only that, but it seems that people are offering me money... for my hobby.
The capitalist in me finds this to be a great opportunity to at least earn some extra dough on the side and I find it flattering, but another part of me feels as if I'm cheating the ones that are willing to pay because they're all in some way DIYers like me.
I've gotten an informal invitation to sell my falls at a local alternative hair salon but for some reason, it drives me a bit crazy to think that the ones that are buying them are the ones better off DIYing their own stuff.
I'm torn. I'd like to sell them, but I'd rather host a workshop sometime to just show others the ropes as to how I go about doing it.
Part of me doesn't really WANT to try to sell them, not out of fear of selling out so much, as fear of maybe not being able to meet demands. Plus, these things really don't come cheap. They just don't.
So I guess from a seller's standpoint, how many tabs would one consider to be in a full set of falls? I figured 10 tabs would make a whole set, but I've seen pigtails with at least 6 tabs on one elastic.
I've figured that selling a tab at 8 to 10 dollars is kinda fair seeing as how long it actually takes for me to make them... which is forever.

I've also been offered to sell falls in a larger city about 2 hours north from where I live. Unfortunately, I make them for myself only. There is also ebay, but still. I put a lot of time and dedication into my sets. I make them for myself. Not for other people and that's how it shall remain.
If you want seller advice, I doub't you'll find any here. Might want to check out the Heavenly Hair forums.

Actually, I kinda figured out a great way to go about doing this.
I REALLY support the whole DIY ideals and self expression and feel that it's better to show than to do for others.
So I think what I'm going to do is host a local art show. I'll probably make about 10 sets that are not bad looking and sell them at 100 a set, BUT while they're at the art show, they can accompany me to a workshop where I can just teach them how I do what I do.
I think this is how I'd really do it. I really love sharing knowledge to others and after the whole demonstration, if there's still some people out there that don't have the patience to make their own, then I guess I could take some orders and let them know that they'll be done when they're done.
What blows my mind is that it's not the goths that are asking about these. It's the punks. o_0

How many sets do you have so far? I've seen the silver and black ones and the steam falls. I'd be interested to see any others you've created.
Teaching is a good way to go. I've hosted little dread making parties at a friends house. Knowing is half the battle, patience is the other.

I have, to my mind, 4 different kinds.
Yes, there's the silver ones, the aviator cap, the newer steampunk ones, and a set that was really odd that I made in about a day from shelf lining. I was trying to find an alternative to tubular crin and I did, but damn.... it takes forever to braid that shit into something cool. It looks like grated rubber springs.

The only ones that I think none of you guys have seen is the later. The rubbery braids one. I may have some pics of the rubber ones later. I think I already have them, but Dark Echo is on a photoshoot right now and well... she has the cam at the moment.

Same here, I did mine for myself as something for me to try. I had about 6 offers and yet I turned them down for a number of reasons (they were being cheap, not willing to pay up front, I'm booked up for projects and I get paid more for making outfits). I basically told them that it's so easy and cheap to make.
I still plan to finish making my next 2 sets since I have already bought the crintubes and that will be enough for me. I'll probably just use them for pics from here on.
Selling on consignment can be a pain when you have negotiate and they will want a chunk of it. You could settle with e-bay or do the art demo to start it off.
The punks want them? I thought there was such thing as cyberpunks

Just a bunch of normies that wanted it for their Halloween costumes.
However, one of them was an anime fan and she wanted falls to go down to her knees. I said it would a bit much on the cost and how the falls would perform, the idea just scares me.

Honestly, the best way to describe it is FORCING them into existence. It's hard to explain. It's a lot of building, really.
