Resident Evil was absolutely amazing. The first one due to the mansion, and the second due to the police station. Then Resident Evil 4's atmosphere seems right now unsurmountable.

The the Silent Hill series was amazing, and has had no failure as of yet. From the first one, being the creepiest due to the fact that you just don't know what's going on, what's going to happen, and the almost incomprehensible plot to four, where the atmosphere and chill factor are even more creepy that RE4.

Though I'd have to say ultimately, the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic were by far the gothiest games. For atmosphere, story, and character evolution. You could turn into a Sith in both games. They were just awesome on all levels.

I'd say that Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a rather goth game, from it's dark atmosphere to it's character design. The soundtrack doesn't quite fit (it's sorta reminds me of Godsmack), but still.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you their. The battle worn prince, the empress of time, the atmosphere, that time mask, and the dahaka.

It mainly all was Godsmack, just without the words.

I enjoyed Silent hill - don't get much gaming time anymore, but here are a few blasts from the past to look out for, for PC (if you can even get them running these days).

Gothy/horror/puzzle
The 7th Guest
The 11th Hour

Gothy/humour/satire
Maniac Mansion
Day of the Tentacle

Apparently there's a new game from Maniac Mansion team coming out soon so I'll probably be picking that up!

Moving away from PC games, there's always AtmosFear - camp but still fun!

I'd say Legacy of Kain: Defiance for the atmospere, rich storyline and imagery. Also the Elder Scrolls series. While you can become a vampire in almost all of them, in the latest installment Oblivion, you can actually sneak into the houses in various towns and cities and drink right from the necks of sleeping citizens.

Devil May Cry games have a generally dark feel, but my current favorite is Shadow of the Colossus.

If you're looking for something challenging and a little scary, the Fatal Frame games are good, too.

Well, you call your horse Agro with X, and you climb it by being next to him and press the triangle.
If you tap X, it will walk, tap again and it will walk faster and if you keep it pressed, it will run.
Outside of the temple, press O so that Wander will get out his sword and raise it up high.
If you notice, there are faint yellow rays that are the sun reflecting in the sword. If you move the camera the rays either become more dispersed or closer together. Look for where all the rays converge together and that's the way you have to go.
A very important button during the game is R1. It lets you climb things. This will be important because you have to climb some ivy to get to the first colossus, and to destroy the colossi (all of them) it involves some sort of climbing, generally by climbing it's fur.
So, let your sword guide you, and look for the fur in the colossi. The colossi themselves will be mazes. It's hard to find them. Harder to kill them.

Agreed. SotC is hard at first because the controls are so touchy, but once you get the hang of it it's a wonderful game. The first boss battle shows you hints about how to play the game/control Wander, etc.

Also, if you eat white-tailed lizards and fruit off of trees, you get a stronger grip meter and more life energy. It takes quite a few to make a significant difference, but it eventually helps out with the tougher colossi.

The most "goth" games I've played were

Condemned (xbox 360)
Manhunt (xbox)
Dues Ex Invisible War (xbox)
The Suffering (xbox)
Clockwork soemthing (I forgot the name but it was for the Playstation)
And last but not least, Oblivion (xbox 360)

I just played "Gears Of War" and, while the content of the game itself isn't in the gothic genre, the scenery is often filled with imposing stone edifices: cathedrals, houses of parliament, lots of things with a gothic architectural flair.

For the PVC, bloodsucking and ability to slow down time (always good) there's Bloodrayne, some spooky environments too, pity it fails to deliver really.

Does Masquerade: Bloodlines get better? I got bored in the first area (Santa B...something)

'Oh mummy!' on the Amstrad, like Pacman but with mummies, excellent.

Thanks Renatus, I'll maybe try push on a bit further with it then.

PCPlus (in the UK) has a retro games special on the coverdisk this month: Day of the Tentacle, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, etc, etc a few of which have been mentioned already (and all the emulators)

I really should get Shadow of colossus...
Devil May Cry is gothy.

And about Pokemon. A thought:

Anyone notice...you take harmless cute animals in that game and make them battle to the death. Ain't that cruel? I mean THINK about it.
