Having been born outside of society's circle, I was always at odds with other people. But I had never really considered myself goth until I got to middle school and someone called me goth.

2 years later..I fully became one and OUT and..

Accepting it is always difficult for people, but they usually feel so much better once they do. It easier to defend yourself when you are confident in your identity...

Well, I'd always been a strange kid... and I think I kinda gradually came to the realization over the course of high school and first year of university, despite the fact that none of my friends were goths, and despite the fact that my parents kept telling me that I was a beautiful girl (somehow, according to them, that means I'm not a goth...) and that more people would like me if I dressed like a normal person.

Don't get me wrong, I know my parents love me and have my best interests at heart, I just don't think they can quite accept that I feel like a tool in normal clothes, or that I'm a walking block of ambivalence.
They do their best, but I seem to be a difficult kid, or something. :$

I still don't really think of myself as a Goth. Seems something I don't know.

Bloody hell, this thread makes goth sound like a disease. Or a mental illness.

Sure, there was a time when I was a self loathing, whinny, angst ridden brat and thought it was all special. Sure. Then I grew up and started enjoying stuff and listening to a lot of goth and death rock.

I don't know that I am goth. I identify with certain types of dress and music, so I choose to be a goth. But its not necessarily who I AM. Now THAT is a whole other question, sheesh - how do I answer that? Erm...I'll let you know when I've figured out what I am. I'm 38 and still haven't figured it out, so I wouldn't hold your breath to hear back from me on this one. ;-)

Yeah, I'm not sure I would say I'm a Goth. I don't really dress Goth except for occasionally and even then it's more rooted in Metal fashion than anything. I listen to the music, but I listen to every genre of music you can think of.

But the Gothic subculture attracts me a lot with its appreciation of art and literature, its great music and the intelligent, sensible people. Plus, the hairstyles fucking rule.

There was a girl in my middle school who came to school one day with her hair dyed black and black nail polish which contrasted starkly with her beautiful shockingly white complexion. I was suddenly powerfully drawn to her. She wasn't goth, she listened to dance and hip hop music and dressed like everyone else in my school otherwise. Still, though, I used to spend long hours in classes fantasizing about what she'd look like if I took off her shapeless baggy clothes and dressed her from my bikerish wardrobe. Oh, wait, perhaps that was when I first realized I was BI. I was always dark and freakish, but going by the predominant definiton of goth here, I never heard goth music untill my first trip to Batcave in NYC. I'm so sad it's a hip hop club now

A Batcave turning hip hop is heresy.

I'm not particularly goth. And the amount I actually give a shit what subculture I'm in has decreased significantly recently. I have, however, always been odd, and had very macabre interests (eg. Beheading roadkill because I like skulls and wanted them)
I never really "became one" I'm the same person as ever, and I enjoy goth rock and the company of (the interesting and informed) members of the subculture. In general.

To limit myself by subculture seems a little pointless.

There was a pair of shades on the table. Methadrine picked them up, cradled them for a while, and found that they seemed to fit his eyes and face very snugly.
You're mine.
And that, more or less, was the end of what was before Mr Meth. Something continued for a while, but what it was, and how it thought, wasn't entirely human.

You have all 26 letters of the English alphabet, do NOT abbreviate 2 and 3 letter words. If it honestly takes that long to type three letter words, LEARN TO TYPE.
