In answer to the original question I can play the piano and the flute. I'd like to learn to play the guitar, and the sax.

Lethean,

Why do you call it an `underdog` when you are going to modify and hot rod it ?

You should put a new neck on to it (unless the lighted frets mod will require that anyway) then you can re name it (or re-finish it) !!!.

Anyone familiar with e-bows? I'd like to hear of their reliability and versatillity. They run off batteries, correct?

I`ve heard of e-bows, but always been curious to trying one out myself, and curious of using a violin bow as Jimmy Page did (except the Violin bows do not last to long on guitar strings apparently) !!!.

Draconysius, if you get an e-bow, please let me know how you get along with it !!!.

You can use a screwdriver on a guitar and get a stringed-intrument effect.

Tell me more, I`m curious about the screwdiver, do you drag it across the strings ?

Yeah. As you can imagine, it can't be used quite like a bow. I usually slide it along the strings at fret level, and move it up and down quickly over a single fret to add to the stringy sound. There was a guitarist named Keith Rowe in the '60s who did similar stuff, I think. Supposedly he influenced Syd Barrett.
The result sounds sort of slide-guitarish, too, I think.

Oh my, I went to GC tuesday, and I now add to my collection:
the Squier VM j bass fretless.

It's similarities to the Jaco "Bass of Doom" is insanely close, and so is the growl (gets better with modding)
Squier is getting really good, and the VM line is comparable to MIM Fenders, and some MIAs (imo)

The Squier company is frowned upon by the music community (namely the bass community).. And it is an Affinity, the lowest of the low....
I'm keeping the neck, because I love the fact that it's the underdog.
Which helps me prove my point, it's the bassist that plays good, not a pricetag.

I know those who have MIA Fenders and can't play worth shit.. While I know experts who have Squiers and blow the others out of the water.

Well said lethean, I`ve come across that with Stratocaster's at times, I once played this Squier Mexican strat (which now have the fender logo) 15 years ago and it was beautiful (had the nice big post CBS `70's headstock which is to improve the resonance of the sound through the wood) !!!.

So you are absolutely right, its the playability and feel of the instrument and the person playing it that matters, along with modern production techniques and cheaper production costs have allowed quality instruments to be accessed by a greater number of players than before !!!.

I wish you could try my fretless FrankenSqueir you would love it !!!.
